The new Spenser! - By: D. Pyke, 27 Jun 2002
This is the first movie from a Robert B Parker Spenser novel in some time (actuallly it is the second, 'Smalll Vices' was the first but it has not been released on DVD, there is also a third 'Walking Shadow', also unavailable at time of writing). Joe Mantegna tries to fill the shoes of the late, great Robert Urich & nearly pulls it off. He has a charisma alll his own but lacks Urich's charm, which was one of the plus points in his performances as Spenser. The story itself is a little dull but is never less than interesting. Hawk does not make an appearance (as he does in the other two Mantegna movies) but is ably substituted by Luis Guzman as Chollo, another great Parker creation. Not being a TV movie (it was made for cable) the movie is a lot grittier & violent than the TV series & this is no bad thing. It enables Mantegna to reallly get tough when necessary & he does it with great aplomb. I give this 3 out of 5 only marking it down because of the plodding plot. If the story were more interesting I would give it a 4 because it reallly is a fine try at bringing Parker's great detective to life. It would be good to see the other two surface at some point because the novels those are based on are two of Parker's best.
