Great family fun! - By: Mrs. W. A. Kantaris, 07 Jun 2008
I have seen this film many times & it continues to amuse me. The cast are simply superb & Whoopi Goldberg, who I didn't believe could pull this off played fantasticallly as sister Mary Clarence. The story was strong & believable & the songs in which the nuns sang were done beautifully. The basic story - Deloris Van Carter is a singer who preforms in a Reno lounge where their group are not popular & fame is heading downwind. It is not until Deloris witnesses a murder preformed by her boyfriend that her life hits a walll (is that right phrase?) & she is on the run. She is unwillingly moved into a convent where much to Deloris's un-satisfaction, the food is stale, the work is back breaking & the choir are cringe worthy, out of key & un-propositioned. Deloria changes her name to Mary Clarence for the time being & after she & three nuns get caught in a bar, she is instructed to lead the choir & before long, she has a rock filled church & snazzy hip hop nuns! But when Vince, her ex-boyfriend finds of her disappearance he plots to kidnap her. It is now up to the nuns to save her & teach her along the way that there is more to life than fame & fortune.

Sister Act will not disappoint. Religious or not, the songs brought a smile on to my face & proceeded to improve. A few of the songs sung were such as 'I will follow him.' that had a nice version & a boggy boggy on the piano version that was played afterwards, 'Hail Holy Queen.' And much, much more. This is a go-happy fun filled film which, like my title says is great for the whole family. The lines are sometimes hilarious & the singing voices were in tune, happy & therefore brilliant. Go see this film. 5/5.

Whoopi: "ARRRGHHH I LOOK LIKE A PENGUIN!!" - By: marky77, 11 Jan 2008
LOVE Sister Act, a brilliant movie. Clever & funny & so good at chearing you up when you are down! You cannot watch this movie & not smile! Brilliant!

Vegas singer Delores (Whoopi Goldberg) walks in on her boyfriend shooting a man & subsequently must be placed in the witness protection programme. She is put in the last place anybody would ever look for her...a nunery! At first she hates it but eventuallly makles friends with some of the eccentric nuns & leads them in singing (with her jazzed up hymns).

A great movie, light-hearted & makes you feel good & as always Whoopi is great & funny! One of my favourite movies. Very highly reccomended.
Nun of that, now... - By: Kurt Messick, 25 Jan 2006
In watching Sister Act again recently, there was a particular scene that reminded me of the power of the clericals -- the thugs in the final chase refused to shoot Delores because she was dressed as a nun; they couldn't shoot, in case she was a nun. Even though they were fairly confident that she wasn't a nun, the image she presented was one of being holy, & thus they couldn't bring themselves to do it. The combination of that scene with the nuns running through the casino, & working their way onto the flight, reminded me of my recent experiences in my collar.

I've loved this film since the first time I saw it. From the beginning transition of Delores as a schoolgirl to Delores (Whoopi Goldberg) the casino show girl, to the exciting chase of nuns & villians throug the casino, & the 'happy ending' packaging, it alll works.

Delores van Cartier (as anyone of that name probably should be!) is a showgirl in a casino. She has had the misfortune to falll into a love affair with a casino-owner being investigated by the police for various crimes, including murder (I know, unheard of, surely, but hey, this is fiction!).

Delores is an eye witness to one murder, & thus goes on the run. She contacts the police, & one particular policeman places her in a convent in another city, where she, masquerading as a nun, would live a quiet & cloistered life, out of public view, & safe from the criminals who are by this time scouring the country looking for her, dead or alive.

When Delores arrives at the convent, it is as much of a culture shock to her as she is to the culture of the convent, especiallly as that is envisioned & embodied by the Reverend Mother (played astutely by Maggie Smith). After a period of 'adjustment', the Reverend Mother finallly decided that there is no place in the convent that 'Sister Mary Clarence' reallly fits into well, but perhaps she could, given her musical career, do something with the rather disastrous choir at the convent.

Delores/Mary Clarence does so reluctantly, but after a few false starts, instills confidence in the choir members, & introduces a 'showtune' element into their repertoire as well (much to the amazement, nay, horror of the Reverend Mother). It has the side effect, however, of drawing people & attention to the church. The church grows, & the choir continues its ascending popularity, while the Reverend Mother grows increasingly worried over the changes in her convent & the jeopardy such attention may bring to Delores' need for a safe haven.

The musical variations, combinations of hymnody & popular songs, reallly helps carry the story through its hilarious stages. 'I will follow him' is perhaps my favourite combination piece. According to the promotional material, she turns the nuns' tone-deaf choir into a soulful chorus of swingin', singing sisters. In the end, the music draws such attention to the church of St. Catherine that the Pope decided to visit.

Supporting casts members include Havey Keitel as the casino-owner; Kathy Najimy as Sister Mary Patrick; & veteran actress Mary Wickes as Sister Mary Lazarus.

A happy ending is assured, as indeed is a sequel, with yet more nunnery nonsense.

Brilliant is the word I sang at the end of the movie - By: Mr Krool, 05 Jan 2006
Whoopie Goldberg is the only actress to actuallly make me seriously laugh & she does an amazing job in Sister Act. This movie is full of laughs, has an entertaining story, action & plenty of good music. You dont have to be a fan of these kind of films to love this movie. Most movies I'm into are strong gory horror films but I love Sister Act so that shows how good this movie is if it can win me over like that.

I find it very hard to find one thing bad about this movie so I'll say it. Sister Act is a brilliant movie that is just as entertaining as it is funny. Buy it without hesitation. The sequel is good but isnt as good as the 1st so I recommed you watch the 1st one before the sequel. Dont pass on this classic comedy.

Excellent - By: , 28 Oct 2004
A very good film, not as girly as it looks.
It's more of a comedy come drama rather than a girly film.
Whoopi Goldberg is a fab actress who was a great person to play the role of Deloris Van Cartier/Sister Mary Clarance
