Accurate and hard hitting - By: Mooji, 23 Nov 2008
The Initiative Factory was established in 1998 partly by sacked dockers to help the community, & the writing for this film started just after the dispute ended. Jimmy McGovern started working on the script, & asked for the help of those involved in the dispute.
The film covers 850 days of the dockers plight. 2 years of picketing, being betrayed by the "Labour" government, 2 years of watching scabs cross the picket, of their union turning their backs on them. The cast are fantastic, & I was shocked to see Ricky Tomlinson play a scab, especiallly given his strong Trade Union background. That must have taken the bloke some effort.
Ken Stott brings to life the frustrations & torments of a man who has worked on the docks alll his life, be sacked attempting to protect his colleagues & spend two years on the breadline fighting for justice.
Not only is this a cracking film, it's a historical document, accurately recording the plight of 500 men & their families attempting to redress the injustice they suffered.
Interestingly, the 16 ex dockers that signed the contract with the film company gave alll the profits to the Initiative Factory, & joined their families & colleagues as extras in the filming.
Fantastic!! - By: , 02 Mar 2002
The main reason why I bought this DVD was because it was written in part by Jimmy Mcgovern.Being from Liverpool myself I obviously knew about the dockers dispute but this drama gives you a totallly new insight. The acting & writing are fantastic & a big plus for this DVD is that you actuallly get the chance to see the channel 4 documentry which shows how the film was brought together with the help of the dockers who co-wrote this project.
If I could recommend one DVD to you this would be it.BUY IT NOW!!
