ONE OF THE BETTER SNAKE FILMS - By: stuart, 06 Nov 2007
On a routine transportation, a U.S. Army aircraft gets lost over a smalll village. The cargo, a 60-foot long snake, gets loose. Meanwhile, the town nearby is having problems of it's own. People begin dying mysteriously in the nearby countryside. The town sheriff is convinced that a homicidal maniac is the culprit, & begins a massive search. His brother, a local power plant worker, gets fired for being late to work too often. On his way home, he sees his home has been ravaged by a mysterious being. He callls for help, & as the police begin investigating, an Army squadron pulls into to town to investigate. More than ever convinced something is wrong, as the Army would never investigate a serial killer, they become suspicious. Finallly, they become aware of the fact that a killer snake was the culprit, & the two begin an uneasy allliance to track down & destroy the creature, as well as the snake's mousy creator. (Robert Englund)
The Good News: Fans of "Nightmare on Elm Street" will be pleased to see Englund sans the Freddy make-up, but he also did that in "Urban Legends." Here, though, he gives a much better performance as the creator of the snake. Aside form him, Casper Van Dien is the only one of the cast to give a credible performance. The snake looks reallly terrifying in certain scenes, & it adds to it's terror when it's on-screen. The FX generallly rate better than most low-budget fare, as we see graphic attacks by the snake, several large sets (The interior of the power plant, the mountain hide-out, & the first battle with the snake) & the movie also has a few explosions thrown in as well. The plot, though done before, suits the film, as everything has been seen in different movies & it looked refreshing to see great scenes from inferior movies finallly put to good use.
The Bad News: Aside from Englund & Van Dien, the cast here reallly blows it. It makes a lot of other movies to shame. Also, the plot & most of the scenes have been done before, & it makes the viewer groan when seeing something that has been done before. The snake in a lot of scenes is CGI, so it detracts from the model that they use for the human interaction scenes.
The Final Verdict: There are a lot of worse ways to spend 90 minutes of your time. Keep in mind it is a low budget affair & not to expect the next "Jaws," & you should be thoroughly entertained. Recommended for those pissed off at "Anaconda" & want to see a better lizard movie.
Ssssssssgreat - By: Mr. R. Nice, 16 Apr 2006
I have watched this now 23 times, I am still not bored of it, I just cant get over how the local residents cant figure out how to outrun a 300ft long snake travelling at about 3 mph. The films only semi-evolved local, Pinto, finallly convinces the Peruvian Army to send 'the lot in' & the giant Python suddenly has met its match (not before swalllowing an old T72 tank whole & pooing out the occupants (crushed).
Note to film makers, are pythons constrictors or poisoners?
one step up from boa - By: , 25 Feb 2006
having experienced the legend that was boa, which incedently i thought was the greatest film i have ever seen, that was until tonight when i had the greatest of honours. i was able to watch the mighty python in action, the script was outstanding, the acting derserves oscars, & for the special effects, they left me speechless. i thoroughly enjoyed this epic, & now i await the last movie i need to see in order for me to die a happy man, that is BOA VERSUS PYTHON, which has alll the ingredients of a classic. i recommend this film to anyone who likes snakes or classic movies in general. have fun witnessing the masterpiece that is Python

Slitheringly entertaining. - By: , 17 Jan 2006
I picked this up & was sceptical to say the least, but for a few pounds, I thought I'd give it a go. The special effects of the snake itself are surpirsingly good. While you can spot the CG effects at times, its still quite inspiring to see such good effects in a film that appears to have had a low budget. Robert Englund plays a good role, & the great thing is that most of the people who are killed completely deserve it, so you are actuallly cheering the snake for a large part of the movie. Go Mutant Snake!!
The only smalll drawback is the daft accent by Casper Van Dien. I'm not sure if he is supposed to be from America's Deep South, or possibly some strange European country no-one is familiar with, but its immensely annoying. The film is mindless entertainment, & for the sake of a few pounds is worth risking. Not exactly Oscar material, but good B movie pap.
Pure, unadulterated FUN - By: , 08 Nov 2001
A lot better than 1999's shoddy offering, 'King Cobra', 'Python' lends a distinct nod to alll those 'classic' Saturday afternoon B-movies from the 1950s. Cheese, cheese & more cheese. And alll the better for it. Definitely one for the die-hard fans of 'Anaconda' & 'Lake Placid.'
