Great off-beat comedy - By: I. R. Kerr, 25 Jun 2006
Shy, opera singing, movie-buff school teacher Brendan fallls for the brash in-yer-face blonde Trudy who turns out to be a burglar. Which is a relief for him as he suspects her of being the masked female castrating vigilante who is attacking men. Slowly he turns away from his old stuffy persona to using Iggy Pop to illustrate his school lessons. Oh come on Brendan sing the Penis song again. Some good movie trivia plants from the obvious visual tributes mainly to A Bout De Souffle from the first film poster onward to more subtle tilts at Once Upon a Time in the West & many others, just freeze-frame the sign outside the cinema & who does not want to see Oskar von Hamme in Remedial Action, as well as a longer version of Flora Montgomery in the Song of Bernadette.
When he finds she is a thief Brendan even helps Trudy out, comicallly robbing a model village & its inhabitants & refusing to make love until the exhibits have had their faces turned away from him.
You must see this at least once.
Funny & tender - By: , 01 Apr 2002
If you enjoyed Roddy Doyle's other films, you'll love this one. Full of fun & some wry asides on the Celtic tiger economy, it's a romantic comedy that can be appreciated by both sexes.
It's a crying shame that films like this don't get the distribution they deserve. Who needs another High School teen horror when you can watch something as intelligent & charming as this?
Indulging in Dublinia - When Brendan met...Adam - By: , 12 Feb 2002
Some people might find this film a bit disappointing: in spite of the excellent performances of the entire cast, the story never seems to get in gear & reallly grasp its audience.
That said, 'When Brendan Met Trudy' still has a lot to offer. There are many amusing scenes & some instances of great dialogue. Above alll, 'When Brendan' will appeal to people who are familiar with Dublin. Some jokes definitely only make sense to an Irish audience!
This film is a fascinating counterpart to 'About Adam', which came out in the same year & depicts Dublin as it would perhaps like to be seen: from its young, trendy, affluent & cosmopolitan side.
'When Brendan' brings us back to Roddy Doyle's Dublin right from the wonderful opening shot.
It is a smalll film, not as easily exportable as 'About Adam' & not as fresh, but it is a gem for those who like to indulge in Dublinia.
