A HELLRAISER KNOCK OFF - By: stuart, 01 Nov 2007
Aaron Boone, (Craig Sheffer) is plagued by nightmares of him killing people, & his psychiatrist, Dr. Phillip Decker, (David Cronenberg) tries to treat him. Still unconvinced, he tries to locate the place in his dreams, but encounters a race of monsters that are trying to keep their existence secret. When they eventuallly get him killed, his girlfriend Lori, (Anne Bobby) decides to go looking for him & encounters the monsters. Decker & Police Detective Joyce, (Hugh Quarshie) also find out that the monsters have Boone, & set out to find him. When the police track him down & show up to put a stop to the killing, Aaron leads the monsters against the invaders.

The Good News: Yet another film by Clive Barker in the "Hellraiser" vein, & while not as good, it does have some worthwhile moments. The creatures here are nicely designed & several are impressive on first sight. The make-up work is the best feature, as technicallly, it's quite striking with alll the designs & creatures throughout the film. The ending showdown is quite action-packed & is a great high to end the film on. Explosions, gunfights & dead bodies galore fill the screen, leaving quite an impressive conclusion. The storyline for this is quite creative. It's creative & alllows for some unusual & creative scenes. The high body count is also nice, as it results in some nice gore & death scenes.

The Bad News: I personallly think this one is overrated. Even though the storyline is quite inventive & creative, the actual execution is a bit of a mess. It's almost impossible to decipher almost anything in here, as it never reallly explains motives or relationships until the end, so it's basicallly asking to keep alll the questions until it decides to reveal them. While smart, that means that only the viewers who are used to clever plot-lines as the ones who enjoy this. The best part of the film is the ending, but up until then, there's reallly nothing that interesting to keep interest. A couple of deaths here & there are spread out through the movie, but so much is at the end that it can be hard to sit through the movie. That there was the movie's biggest fault: it's hard to sit through it if not in the mind frame to watch it. There's a sense of this trying to be a new "Hellraiser" but it also fails miserably. The effects look great, & there's a sense of them trying to have a similar personality, but the creatures are nowhere near as memorable as Pinhead & his friends.

The Final Verdict: While I feel it is overrated, there's still enough here to give it a look. It's not the best adaption of Barker's work, but it has enough fans to warrant a look. Give it a shot.

"You are no longer Boone, you are Cabal." - Baphomet - By: Peter J. Hodgson, 12 Jul 2007
This is one of Clive Barkers best films other than Hellraiser, this should have got a sequel as the premise seemed so epic. Nightbreed is awesome, the story is very clever & well thought of & the characters are so real. Made in 1990 this movie wasnt appreciated as it was & remains ahead of its time & deals with issues that are very real today, they shouldnt remake this but they should show it again at the cinema for alll to see. A truly great movie.

Much underated classic film - By: S. Sharp, 25 Feb 2007
I will admit, I was very unsure about giving this film a 5 rating but decided to do so for these reasons...

The premiss of the story is excellent, the human characters are the REAL monsters & the monsters are on the most part humane (this says alot about humaities "history" of fearing/destroying the things we dont understand. Also the "saviour" of the Nightbreed (Boone/Cabal) ultimately brings about their downfalll because of his own selfishness (a commentry on modern religion, perhaps?) And finallly... Cronenberg is frightfully chilling as Dr Decker!

This film is crying out for a well constructed remake/sequel, but PLEASE Barker can write the story but DONT let him direct it!

This is a film which swops the roles of good & evil. A tale of twists. Stunning to watch & a good read. Buy Cabal by Clive Barker watch the film adaption. Long to be Nightbreed.
