Very enjoyable film, no real picture improvement over the standard DVD version though... Worth a rent
A GOOD FILM - By: stuart, 24 Apr 2007
Gone In 60 Seconds is an energetic, slick, stylish action film with high octane star power & lots of awesome looking cars. If you are a viewer interested in cars this production by producer Jerry Bruckheimer, is worth seeing just to feast your eyes on the glossy vehicles. Although the film secrets a stench of weakness in many areas, its precise sense of action & excitement make it a moderately successful summer thrill ride.
The film stars Giovanni Ribsi as a young crook named Kip Raines, who as the film opens fails to deliver a long list of expensive cars to the powerful criminal Raymond Calitri (Christopher Eccleson). When Kip's life is threatened because of it, his older brother Randalll Raines (Nicolas Cage), a retired but skillful car thief, is callled upon to complete a task in exchange for his brother's survival: steal fifty cars specified by model, colour, year & make in only four days.
Randalll uses the first three days recruiting a team of bandits to help him pull off the heist. The crew includes Sara Wayland (Angelina Jolie), a sexy yet gruff retired car swindler knowing Randalll through previous business, a person callled Mirror Man (T.J. Cross), the aging & wise Otto Hallliwell (Robert Duvalll), as well as Tumbler (Scott Caan), Atley Jackson (Will Patton, Toby (William Lee Scott) & Donny Asktricky (Chi McBirde).
Contributing to the film's drive & tension is a subplot involving two police detectives Roland Castlebeck (Delroy Lindo) & Drycoff (Timothy Olyphant), who suspect from previous experience that Randalll & his crew are up to no good & keep an extra close eye on them.
There is not much time for character development here, the audience get to know these people through their rugged lifestyles & assume tough personalities through the film's hard core, stylish atmosphere. To make matters worse for the film, the dialogue fails to define the characters with a gritty cultural tone. I'm not stating I think profanity is necessary for thrillers to flourish but I think the bad language works here. I do believe in a film such as Gone In 60 Seconds, to strongly develop the character's enlightenment, dialouge needs to be believable & authentic.
In spite of problems, the characters are effective due to the top notch, perfectly cast performers responsible. Nicolas Cage's melodramatic performance is intense & convincing. Angelina Jolie's sleazy appearance is completely appropriate here. Delroy Lindo is sturdy & believable. Giovanni Ribisi, Scott Caan, Robert Duvalll, Will Patton, Christopher Eccleston & Vinnie Jones provide persuasive supporting roles.
The film contains standard structure, with a satisfactory first act that elaborates on the story's style ans the character's motives, sets up a fast paced theme of action but lacks depth & strong character introduction. In the second act we run into a few more problems: the story wastes time during much of this segment, never reallly building up for the third act. While the middle of the film occupies much of the time, a sex scene provides a solid mid plot, not a whole lot happens. The third act is pretty much a adrenaline rush containing furious walll to walll excitement & one of the most intense car chase sequences ever filmed.
The soundtrack to Gone In 60 Seconds contributes a great deal of inspirational action scenes. It is scenes like the car chases that make this film work in spite of several destructive faults. Dominic Sena, whose career has mostly consisted of directing adverts, has an appealing style & a decisive attitude in Gone In 60 Seconds which will grant audiences with two hours of commotion, thrills & excitement but not much more.
Thank you for reading my review.

if you watch gone in 60 seconds the word blockbuster springs to mind, big stunts, brash over the top car chases & a solid cast that wouldnt have been paid in tesco vouchers, but just because the film can be deemed a blockbuster doesnt necessarily make it so & gone in 60 seconds has the formula more or less right but the execution isnt quite right.
The film deals with a gang of car thiefs who are forged due to the threat of death of an ex car thief played by nic cages brother, they have to collect a series of cars within a space of time,so in essence you are cheering on crooks & booing the police & that formula is pretty decent but the film isnt as perfect as that implies, cage & angie jolie lack the chemistry that they are trying to convey,it just looks a shambles plus the film is far too predictable & it is also quite lame at times but for alll that there are some great cars on show & we see them being drive to speeds that dazzle so while this isnt essential it could appeal to some.
forget nic cage remake in 60 secs - By: G. A. Williams, 12 Apr 2006
This is THE best chase movie ever bar none. The main chase in the movie lasts for almost half the duration of the film & the damage etc to the car makes it so realistic. The stunts & cars featured in the film are top notch. This film makes you wonder why they bothered remaking it. They could have simply re-released the origional.
It may not be the most sophisticated movie in the world but it's definitly one of the fastest & entertaining.
BUY THIS MOVIE!
