Now THIS is Eddie Murphy at his finest! - By: N. Seeds, 04 Jul 2008
...not that NORBIT rubbish!
- Golden Child? Great
- Dr Doolittle(s)? No probs
- Daddy Day Care? Good
- 48 Hours & BHills Cop aren't my cup-of-tea but are classic Murphy.
- COMING TO AMERICA is the best!
- NORBIT is far & away the closest to 'Donkey' that Eddie Murphy has come to (and that says something considering he voiced 'Donkey' in the Shrek films which were great!)
If you like Eddie Murphy, watch Coming To America again - do not watch Norbit! And if you're reading this after watching Murphy in Norbit & liked it (shudder!) then don't watch this because it is a completely different actor!!!
Worth a Date - By: Jay, 23 Apr 2007
After several years of starring in rowdy action comedies & con man capers, Eddie Murphy gets a chance to deliver a more restrained performance with this film & he manages to do so very well. Murphy portrays Akeem, an African prince who is being pressured into a forced marriage by his parents (James Earl Jones, Madge Sinclair). The woman that they have chosen for him only sees him for his royalty & therefore does not reallly love him. Akeem sees this right away & brings his loyal servant, Semi (Arsenio Halll) along with him on a discreet mission to America where Akeem hopes to find a beautiful woman who will love him & accept him for who he reallly is & not just see him for his royalty. Posing as "common folk", Akeem & Semi get jobs at a McDonald's style restaurant & Akeem soon fallls for the daughter (Shari Headley) of the restaurant's owner (John Amos). The film features many hilarious scenes & characters especiallly a group of boxing obsessed senior citizens who spend their days arguing with a barber shop owner. Murphy & Halll demonstrate their levels of versatility by managing to go under heavy makeup & portray several different costarring roles. Yet another example of why Murphy is one of the funniest actors in recent Hollywood history.
Is this a comedy????? - By: Colin P. Evans, 22 Apr 2007
After reading alll the other reviews i can safely say that i'm sure they watched a different film from me. beacause after hearing how funny that coming to america was i watheced it expecting a comedy of when edie murphy was funny unlike everything he has done in the past 15 years but unfortunatley this film is as terrible as such disaster as pluto nash, & daddy day care .
'He helped Gilligan get off the island!' - By: Gem, 21 Mar 2007
Quite simply one of the funniest films I have ever seen. Eddie Murphy & Arsenio Halll are comic dynamite as Akeem & Semi - & alll of the other characters they play in the film! There are so many moments of pure comic brilliance in this film but my favourite parts of the film are the scenes set in the barber shop & the scenes involving Arsenio Halll's Reverend Brown. I have watched this film over & over again & I still laugh every time I see it. Pure comic genius.
a great film that has lasted the test of time - By: sean paul mccann, 08 Feb 2007
Coming to america is a 1988 film directed by john landis & starring eddie murphy as a young heir to the throne in a city i africa, alll his life he has been pampered & spoilt & now he has a bride picked for him to marry, feeling trapped by his surroundings & the expectations placed on him, eddie along with his royal aide decide to banish free of their luxeries & head to america where eddie can find real love & find out what life is alll about.
The final is genuinely funny in parts & always entertaining & thats a rare thing, there are some memorable scenes as eddie cant adapt to america at first, the film is racist in parts, there is no point avoiding that fact,i suppose these things make for some humourous moments & i guess in 1988 racism wasnt the issue it is today so beware of this if you are new to coming to america but for the most part its alll very tongue in cheek & i doubt if there was intention to offend, but alll in alll this is a funny film made in an era when murphy was goldust & this film is another alll round success.
