Nice movie but... - By: carlitophage, 12 Feb 2008
This is a nice movie. I saw it as a child & it was no edited in France. I bought it here on amazon. It is written that the movie is subtitled in french. But this is not the case! Amazon, you should check the informations before showing it on your site! So for the french people who don't speak english, don't buy this DVD because you may not understand a word!
Detailed and very well acted - By: Diane Burke, 19 Jan 2007
This is an excellent depiction of the last years of the Romanov empire. The characters have been played by superb actors - particularly Tom Baker who makes an eerie resemblance to the mad Rasputin. The ending is particularly tense & frightening.
I first watched the video version & found it enthrallling. Strong cast, great costumes & although history has now told us what happened in the end, a plot that couldn't be made up.
I enjoyed this immensely.
Brilliant movie, but a seriously dodgy DVD - get the video! - By: Stew Carr, 19 May 2006
I'd just like that this movie is excellent, the acting is perfect, the storyline reallly compelling, the soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful & the director ought to have won an oscar - the film reallly evokes a feeling of 'Mother Russia', & it brings out the full drama & turbulence of the Russian Revolution. It's such a unique, beautiful film - many of the scenes will stay with you long after you have seen the film & it's one of my favourites.
The problem is not the movie, it's this DVD. Am I right in thinking this DVD used different takes than the original film? It seemed to use takes which weren't as top-notch as the original movie, it incorporated some 'extra scenes' of err... circumspect quality (there was a good reason they were left out!) into the main feature, & as a whole, the film looked sloppy & messy with bad editing - it just didn't go together like the original film.
To add to this, the sound on this DVD is reallly bad, it was either extremely loud or extremely quiet, & I kept having to mess about with the volume every 2 seconds.
All in alll, this is a reallly good film & it's just a shame that the DVD doesn't do full justice to it. If you want to see 'Nicholas & Alexandra' in it's original form (the way it's meant to be!) get the video. Only watch this if you absolutely MUST see the extra scenes (which are fairly pointless).
And there were no extras in this either...how cheap is that!
Royal family genocide movie at its best-- - By: two, 15 Oct 2005
Excellent historical movie Suzman is bril. as the the ill fated Tzarina (is that right?) How the angry mobs were alllowed to wipe out one of the most famous Royal families of Europe while us British stood back & let it happen. And yes,we need not have as alll the murderous signs were there long enough for us to act--superb film & worth watching 10 times over.
Fantastic Costume Drama! - By: , 04 Jun 2002
The story of Nicholas II & Alexandra, his tsarina have long fascinated the western world. This film is a pleasure to watch despite some historical inaccuracies. There were some fantastic performances like the ones from Michael Jayston (the Tsar), Janet Suzman (the Tsarina,) Irene Worth (the Empress Dowager,) Harry Andrews (Grand Duke Nicholas) & from Tom Andrews (Rasputin.) But there were also some very disappointing scenes - the Tsar's four daughters spoke about a line each & seemed to be perpetuallly laughing & the portrayal of Prince Felix, Grand Duke Dmitry & Rasputin's death was overdone & irritating.
But besides this the film is good & well worth watching!
