What a disaster - By: Mr. Mg Reynolds, 26 Oct 2007
Are the people planning on making Carry On London totallly potty ? Modernising the Carry On's by bringing in a load of new comics & actors while making things too lewd with a barrage of single - entendres did not work in 1992 & for that reason will fail in 2008 . Julian Clary , Sara Crowe , Rik Mayell , Martin Clunes , Maureen Lipman , Richard Wilson , Alexi Sayle & Nigel Planner are just not the Carry On team . They have not the skills of people like Kenneth Williams , Hattie Jacques , Joan Sims , Bernard Bresslaw , Kenneth Connor , Sid James , Charles Hawtry & Peter Butterworth needed to play this kind of comedy . The scripting is feeble as Dave Freeman is not the writer that Talbot Rothwell was & Mr Freeman was not given enough time which explains why Carry On Behind was better than Columbus but not as good as say Carry On Doctor . Dave Freeman took longer to write Behind which was not as good as Doctor but Behind was better than Columbus . The only way this film could have worked is that if it had been turned over to David Croft , Jeremy Lloyd & Jimmy Perry to write , produce & direct . The characters could have been written & played as versions of those seen in Allo Allo , Dad's Army , Are You Being Served ? , Hi de Hi & It Ain't Alf Hot Mum . David Croft was still making new things at the time & so Carry On Columbus could have been a popular old school comedy using the superb actors in the Croft TV series plenty of whom were still active in 1992 . John Inman & Frank Thornton could have taught Julian Clary & Richard Wilson a thing or two . Gordon Kaye & Vicki Michelle would have done a far better job than Alexi Sayle & Sara Crowe . Jim Dale & the other survivors try hard but as the dismal editing cut the part of Jack Douglas to nothing it is just a bad film .
carry on regardless - By: Roxetteboy, 08 Jul 2005
Obviously not the best of the Carry Ons but this could have been truly awful if it had wanted.Ive never liked Julian Clary much but i thought he saved this from going down the.....Of course some of the surviving original cast at the time(Joan Sims & Barbara Windsor)refused to take part & Jack Douglas has said that he wishes he never took part.If you're a Carry On fan then this is something you probably have to own even if you dont like it.but if you do like this then thats a bonus!Lets hope the planned Carry On London does better......
Carry On Columbus - By: John Colborne, 05 Dec 2004
Ever since I saw Carry on Columbus I have had to own it & besides, it rounds out my Carry on Gang collection.
I found it very funny in places & I thought the acting to be quite good.
I found the opening scenes in the Sultan of Turkey's palace a bit shaky, but once Jim Dale & Bernard Cribbens start acting the film settles down nicely. I think Cheryl Crowe does a wonderful job as Fatima.
Unlike other reviewers, I thought the scenes in America with the natives were well constructed & funny.
In my view the movie is very good, but doesn't have the "feel" of the other Carry on Gang films. This is inevitable as so many faces have changed & times have moved on, but overalll it was, in my opinion a very good attempt & I still enjoy the gags watching the movie as I get a good laugh out of it.
"Carry On Columbus" Equal to Other "Carry On" Films - By: S. Booker II, 08 Jun 2004
Though many of the older stars are gone to their reward, those remaining stars like Jim Dale & Bernard Cribbens, along with newer stars like Peter Richardson, Maureen Lipman, Alexi Sayle, Rik Mayalll, & Sara Crowe turn in fine performances & reallly funny humour, worth of the late Charles Hawtrey, Kenneth Williams, Sid James, & the other regulars. This is one of the "Carry On" films that I buy & give to acquaintances & friends as gifts for the Yuletide season. I am proud to say I own a copy of this video & alll of the others as well & this ranks in equality with the others. Sarge
A reasonable Carry on Film... - By: , 18 Nov 2002
I first saw 'Carry on Columbus' a few years ago on TV, & thought it was quite a good film, & then i remembered that Julian Clary, a favourite comedian of mine, was in it & I had to get it on video.
It's widely regarded that 'Carry on Columbus' is one of the worst Carry on Films made, but to be fair, it's not alll that bad & does contain quite a lot of good jokes, & an interesting enough plot to keep you hooked. Most of the actors involved are modern comedians/actors, with a few original Carry on actors as well.
One of the best things about the film is that it stars Julian Clary, & he has one of the best performances, his camp style of humour helps add to the film nicely! 'Carry on Columbus' has a good plot to start with, but later bits (mostly in america) were a bit boring & didn't seem to go anywhere - & this lets it down.
But overalll, I did like 'Carry on Columbus', & if you like any of the actors involved, you should check it out!
