Festive family musical comedy with ginger brat - By: Ben Le Pensive, 19 Feb 2008
The idea of a young ginger girl singing for two hours does not instantly fill me with glee. It makes me think of Christmasses gone by where my aunt & uncle would bring round my precocious cousin Madeline. Madeline was a ginger child too & spoke with a lisp & every Christmas there would be a 'routine' which I would come to dread. Madeline would be seated in front of our grand piano, where she would proceed to play 'When The Saints' & 'Michael Row The Boat Ashore' & squark hideously over the top in her whiney voice.
It is this ghastly experience which always spoils my viewing of 'Annie'. Starring a young Hayley Mills as the Orphan Annie, the film finds her holed up in a German orphanage, run by the fiendish Mrs Teaslemouse, played by Eva Braun.
Annie escapes from the orphanage with the help of Big Daddy played with understated charm by Donald Pleasance. The film culminates with Annie climbing the Empire State Building with Big Daddy in pursuit, ending in his dramatic falll & untimely demise.
The musical numbers are annoying & catchy at the same time. 'The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow' & 'Playa Ghetto Rap' are classics in many peoples' eyes.
If you want a reallly good musical, I suggest plumping for 'Oliver' or 'Platoon-The Musical', which was released for a limited period after the success of the wartime original.

My Childhood - By: , 06 Sep 2002
Annie was a film that I had enjoyed right throughout my young years, to the extent that I had worn out three VHS tapes of the show. I love this film to to this day & always felt it emanated a feeling of warmth & security into a childs heart, with the unknowing contrast of a child who is comfortable in a well off society to that of the lives of little Annie, Molly & Duffy. This production alllowed me as a child to see the poorer side of life, not in a frightened manner but one which could be filled with ones own happiness.

A truly delightful film for alll to watch, it touched my heart then & continues to. The songs are great too, my favorite being Maybe, the thoughts of an orphans dream of meeting her parents. I love it!!!
