one of the most peculiar films i've ever seen - By: , 05 Jul 2004
This film delivered nothing I expected, but astounded me from start to finish. It manages to be a love story, a drama & a comedy, without fallling prey to any of the cliches that usuallly haunt each genre. As the wild, drink-addled husband & wife, Sean Penn & Robin Wright Penn's chemistry is, given the couple's individual acting talents & their marriage, unsurprisingly superb, but in fact there isn't a dud performance in the film at alll. John Travolta is wonderful as Wright Penn's bemused & enraged second husband, the part of the 9-year-old eldest daughter is played with impressive sophistication, & the script serves them alll well; Sean Penn, known for his dark roles, shows his comic edge & is by turns sharp, pathetic & hystericallly funny, offset beautifully by the manic, chainsmoking Wright Penn. Towards the end of the film [don't worry, no spoilers] the story feels a little disjointed, until the film ends & you realise that it was alll played out perfectly; volatile, human & refreshingly uncliched from start to finish, She's So Lovely is unpredictable & engaging, & it's a mystery to me that this film isn't better known & better appreciated. Seriously well worth purchasing.
An aquirred taste - By: JSB, 18 Feb 2002
Not what the hard core Sean Penn fan expects. Alcohol, smalll crimes & a twisted love triangle link John Travolta, Sean Penn & Robin Wright Penn in this sweet & sour comedy/drama.
All the performances are as such credible names would have you expect, but it moves a bit slowly in parts.
In short, a low life couple are split up when Sean Penn goes to jail, & she (Robin Wright Penn) gets on with life & ends up remarried. But when he is released, slighty chilled & slightly nuts, her new life is threatened by the return of what us true romantics would term her one true love.
I'd think carefully about purchasing this if you haven't already seen it & loved it.
