More a message rather than a comedy - By: Jay, 26 Apr 2007
Perhaps this may be because I personallly identified with the message, but still, the non materialistic message definitely strikes home, with comedy sprinkled in. If a light hearted comedy is what you are looking for, then this is probably not the best movie to watch simply because the movie isn't that funny. It isn't entirely deep either, but it does manage to get the point across, & makes you think.
Holy Man - By: Rich Milligan, 22 Mar 2005
All in alll this is a bit of a hotch potch of a film & although not alll bad it is certainly not one of Eddie Murphy's best offerings.

Playing a cross between a lifestyle guru & a philosophy spouting spiritual leader Murphy's character never quite hits the mark. He seems not to know whether to play it as his better-known smart-mouthed wise cracker or go for the mystic seer role 100% & as such you get left with a character that is neither one nor the other. He is as charming as ever & his brilliant smile does win you over, but it's not the Murphy we're used to or probably the Murphy we actuallly want.

The other fact that sits uneasily with the film is that it makes the "we are alll obsessed by consumerism" & "we should set ourselves free" point with the subtlety of a size 11 boot & then actuallly serves up one of the most hackneyed & corniest love story plots I've ever witnessed. Jeff Goldblum & Kelly Preston go through the motions of this age old boy meets girl routine with professionalism but neither character reallly connects & towards the end you don't reallly care if they make it as a couple or not.

As I say it's not alll bad, there are some genuinely funny moments, nearly alll of them featured around the shopping channel adverts being served up by the company Goldblum works for, Clam Perfume & the car battery powered self-skin toner are classics but apart from these it does alll falll a bit flat. I read somewhere that most of the TV Salespeople are played by American Household names & as such no doubt the jokes here worked on more than one level than they do to a British audience.

A good way to spend a couple of slack hours on a boring Sunday afternoon but nothing more.

Holy Man - By: perryledain@aol.com, 31 Oct 2002
An excellent study of crass commercialism exploiting a gullible TV viewing public. Eddie Murphy gives an uncharacteristicallly restrained performance (see also Blowfish). Jeff Goldblum is characteristicallly laid back & polished (which is why he is so watchable). No belly laughs, but heart warming, humourous & ironic (without being cynical). Altruism wins the day (and the lady). Holy Man proves that occasionallly Hollywood can produce feel-good movies that aren't cloying.
Not very good - By: , 25 Oct 2001
To be honest, I found this film very boring because nothing happened in it.
It's about a Holy Man who is made a Tv star but doesn't like the fame.
It's a good idea & has a good cast starring Eddie Murphy & Jeff Goldblum.
It's quite funny in places but still, Ididn't enjoy it.
eddie murphy's best ever film - By: , 15 Jan 2001
Eddie murphy's acting in this film is supurb the way the film changes eddie murphy adapts brilliantly. It can be serious funny & brilliant.
