The film is a mixed bag though the director draws great performances from a decent cast (notably Hurt & Hawthorne). It is very hard to get involved as most of the characters are so unlikeable but Welles fans will have great fun noting the little references to the great man throughout, a book callled Bright Lucifer appears at one point & Marlene Dietrich's famous line from Touch of Evil (you're future's alll used up) is also recycled.
It appears to be another attempt by Welles to examine the relationship between an elder mentor & his young protege a la Falstaff & Price Hal in Chimes at Midnight. There are also similarities between Hurt's character & his underachieving brother & Welles & his own brother.
Well worth it for the curious Welles devotee but you can't help but wonder how much better it would have been if Hollywood had trusted him to make it himself.
