Faithful(ish) interpretation of Ursula K LeGuin classic - By: MM Turner, 11 May 2004
This is a made-for-TV-format interpretation of Ursula K LeGuin's 'The Lathe of Heaven'. Basicallly, the story is about a man in the not-too-far future who dreams. So far so good, but Orr's dreams actuallly change reality. Things are bad enough for him at the start, but once he encounters a psychiatrist who decides to manipulate this unique ability, his life - & everybody else's - begins to descend into a kaleidoscope of changing realities.

As adaptations go, this is deliciously faithful to LeGuin's original, although it stops shortly after the point where the psychiatrist is himself transformed by the dreams, which is about two-thirds through the novel.

What it does lack is the sense of infinity, mystery & confusion which the novel offers. There is ever such a slight sense of flatness.

All in alll, Lathe of Heaven makes very enjoyable viewing, even if it doesn't quite scale the heights.

Warmly recommended.
