Great gig, terrible editing - By: J. E. C. Burton, 09 Feb 2008
There's no faulting the power & musicianship behind the performance captured here, but it would have been reallly nice to get the full Tommy (as per the accompanying soundtrack CD) rather than edited highlights from it. I realise some directors/producers are under pressure to scale back the running time of concert films for the attention-deficit, but still... it would have been nice to see such a top-grade performance in its full glory.

On the plus side, it's nice to see the two bonus tracks missing from the original VHS added to the extras - Substitute & a cracking early version of Naked Eye. If you like the Who and/or classic rock, this is worth buying in spite of its faults. Just remember to take sea-sickness medication for some of the camera work.
WOW - By: D. L. Titchmarsh, 24 Feb 2007
Wether you like The Who or not I guarentee you this DVD will make you wish you could go back in time & be there, it just builds & builds making you feel like you missed something special.
It left me feeling like the studio albums of The Who were almost a playdown of their true talent, imagine for one minute a group known for trying radical live music comes together just for one night in a way that was probably as surprising to them as the audience then just relaxing & playing the best live music you could wish for!
Well buy this & you'll soon realise why Keith Moon & John Entwhistle were so special.

Basicly if you see this DVD you will know what's missing from every live performance since 1970.

A magic concert that will never be repeated in my opinion, almost makes it impossible to see The Who live now as dissapointment is the only feeling you'll get.
One of the best! - By: Alan Burridge, 12 Sep 2006
Considering this Isle of Wight Festival was something of a shambles, (Ref: BBC2 documentary 'Sink the Island,' broadcast in 2001), it's a miracle any band's played. With Fiery Creations boss, Ricky Farr, then in his infancy at staging such an event, & Mick Farren, (then of It magazine), & friends doing everything possible to turn it into a free festival, (they believed it should be because how can an outdoor event have tickets when the crowd could sit beyond the fenced perimeter & listen for nothing), it was indeed a miracle.
But this excellent DVD has captured The Who at perhaps the best point in their career, & one of those 'must buys' for just about any rock fan. Marred only by 'Magic Bus' cut in as the 10th song when it actuallly should have been the last, (as Pete Townshend begins guitar demolition, which abruptly stops, then moves to the next song), the balance is masterful. Just a pity the person / people editing such filmed performances don't leave the running order alone; every band's set builds to a peak, & to have it placed somewhere else just isn't cricket! But that gripe ignored this is an excellent buy.
Wow!! - By: golden meadows, 13 Jun 2006
I never appreciated how good the Who were until I saw this live performance. Townsend is brilliant in his playing & theatricals. Keith Moon is incredible - he seems to merge into & become one with his drum set -his timing has to be seen & not just heard to be believed. Entwhistle is impeccable & the group as a whole are at the peak of their powers. The only quibles I have relates to the camera positioning - I would like to have had a better view of Keith Moon & those sticks going up in the air & being captured again with effortless ease. Its over 30 years since I last bought a Who album but after watching this I have also ordered up "The Kids are Allright", "Thirty years Maximun R&B" DVD's along with the 4 cd box set. Highly recommended.

The Who Rock the Isle of Wight - By: Boris, 03 Sep 2004
A definate must by. The Who invented the live performance with wonderful concerts like this. The energy they alll show on stage plus the greatness of tommy & the less well known stuff make this a thrill to watch. Best Music DVD I have ever watched in my life from the best band i've ever heard. Pure good old fashioned rocking!!!
