Not a patch on 1933 - By: Gem, 30 Dec 2007
'Gold Diggers of 1933' is one of my favourite films. It has a good storyline, great actors, witty one-liners, fabulous music & terrific dance numbers. 'Gold Diggers of 1935' is such a disappointment as it is not a patch on its predecessor.

I can be easily drawn in by a filmsy plot if the story & characters are engaging but unfortunately this was not the case with '1935'. While the charming Dick Powell does his job well, he reallly does need Ruby Keeler, Joan Blondell or one of the other main actors from '1933', 'Footlight Parade' or '42nd Street' to give this film some pep. The only reason I gave this film 3 stars is due to the fantastic 'Lullaby of Broadway' & 'The Words Are In My Heart' numbers.

Worth seeing for the musical numbers & for the great Dick Powell but that's alll.

The Greatest Dance Routine - By: Mrs. Amanda C. Goodden, 17 Feb 2007
I became captivated by this film when I was 15 - am now nearly 52! The plot is paper-thin, as described by the previous reviewer, but the piano sequence utterly spectacular. However, he neglects to mention that "The Lullaby of Broadway" number is one of the most spectacularly thrilling, hard & dramatic numbers ever committed to film. You are totallly caught up in the swirl of the number, & I don't think any one is fooled by the fact that alll builds up to this - miss it at your peril. It is so rare, & increasingly difficult to capture it on VHS or DVD in European version. You will never have seen the rythmic beat of tap dancing like this before or since, nor with such a dramatic finale.
The Lullaby of Broadway - By: B. Chandler, 29 May 2006
Another great Busby Berkeley production. However with the same formula & a slight variation it can get a little long in the tooth. However some people can not get enough & it is a shame they will soon have to come to an end. You will see the signature innovative stile that Busby takes this time with pianos & the signature close-ups he is known for.

The story is again the depression. This time a grand hotel is sprucing up for a new season. Matilda Prentiss (Alice Brady) tightwad millionaire must be persuaded to part with money form a charity show. Mean time back at the ranch she hires Dick Curtis (Dick Powell) to escort her daughter Ann Prentiss (Gloria Stuart) & keep her out of trouble. You guessed it the two falll in love. The plot thickens. We have our standard grand finallly & signature song.
