Average movie, Unimpressive Blu-ray transfer - By: Garry Williams, 27 Jun 2008
To be honest, this movie is pretty harmless. It's not got a huge amount in its favour..it's just a very average thriller with a simple plot. There's nothing in here that is going to surprise or shock you... It's quite clear that they didn't put a lot of effort into researching the science behind the fiction as, well, they didn't go into any detail.... it more like 'oh look, fancy hydrogen generator.....it'll change the world... everybody run...there's some bad guys who want to bury the technology' Like I said...simple plot. Did find it quite amusing to see Neil Flynn play one of the cops though (he's the janitor from scrubs for those who don't know). Where this Blu-ray is such a letdown though is in the transfer. Quite frankly...it's far worse than average. Most of the time you can hardly tell that it's been given any boost at alll over the standard DVD release. In fact, it almost seems like they've just taken the DVD encode & done a sloppy upscale to 'high def'. The source material looks poor. It feels very grainy (note: I don't always mind seeing film grain...but the picture has to at least look good in high def). There's noise in certain sections. But mainly it's because it's too soft, the colours & textures appear too flat for Blu-ray. To the movie studio: Put more effort in next time please.... Blu-ray is capable of so much more. Were it not for the quality issues I have, the movie would have received 3 stars. But if you're going to sell something as 'next gen', you damn well better be prepared to get callled on it when you do such a poor job of it. 2 stars
"Kill them all and let God sort out the innocents" - By: B. Chandler, 08 Jan 2007
Eddie Kasalivich (Keanu Reeves) is first among his colleagues searching for free clean energy to better the world. On the eve of what looks like success a horrible accident (yeah right) dispatches Dr. Alistair Barkley (Nicholas Rudalll.)
Eddie complains that it was not an accident so of course everyone knows that Eddie is the culprit assisted by colleagues Dr. Lily Sinclair (Rachel Weisz), & Lu Chen (Tzi Ma). While his employer Paul Shannon (Morgan Freeman) is unshakably not sure (why?).
As with most mysteries the only way to prove his innocence is to find the guilty.
All the parts are well played & the story is just in plausibility. The twists & turns will keep you intrigued until the last. Not too long of a chase scene.
Redressing the Balance - By: , 24 Sep 2004
I first saw this film when it was released at the cinema & at the time declared it was the worst film I had ever seen. I have subsequently watched many many other films & recently saw this again on DVD & sadly Chain Reaction still ranks near the top of my list of painful movie experiences.
The plot is convoluted in the extreme & anybody with even a sketchy knowledge of science will find it laughable in places, on top of this the acting is frankly shocking. Reeves is so bad I could not bring myself to go & see the Matrix when it was first released, I couldn't believe he was capable of making a good film, mind you parts II & III of the Matrix do seem to suggest that my judgement wasn't that bad... Despite this I'd still recommend people try & watch this film (but don't BUY it) as it is hilarious in places, I'd like to think its deliberate from Morgan Freeman who seems to be hamming it up in places, wait for the line "have you got the disk?" & you'll see what I mean. I'm posting this review because, post Matrix, people could easily come across this & see that it stars Keanu Reeves & Morgan Freeman & think it will probably be pretty good, I'd hate for them to be disappointed.
CHAIN REACTION - By: julia, 02 May 2004
This is actuallly a very good film though people did put me off it before i saw it.
The story follows two young scientists; Eddie Kasalivich (Reeves) & Lily Sinclair (Weisz) who are wrongly accused of a murder of a fellow scientist, just as Eddie makes an amazing break through. On the run from the police, Eddie & Lily confide in their 'friend' (Freeman) who is a powerful bureaucrat, but is he on their side?...
A twisted plot; how will it end? Will the police realise the truth...before it is too late?
Chain Reaction stars Keanu Reeves (Matrix trilogy,The Watcher), Rachel Weisz (The Mummy,The Mummy Returns) & co-stars Morgan Freeman. A film deffinately worth seeing.
Rather good little film with exciting sequences - By: D. J. Parsons, 15 Dec 2003
Ah yes; yet another underrated Keanu Reeves film. This one comes from the director of "The Fugitive", & co-stars Morgan Freeman, & so has good credentials. Keanu acquits himself well & is both likeable & believable as a student machinist. His chemistry with Rachel Weisz (they're teaming up again for the forthcoming "Constantine") is also sweet & unforced.
But lets face it, this is the kind of movie in which you expect high-octane thrills, & in this the movie does not disappoint. There are stunning opening & closing sequences, & a superb chase sequence involving a bridge.
The DVD comes with one of those promotional 'featurettes' that aren't reallly worth bothering. On the plus side, the picture quality & soundtrack are both very decent. If you didn't catch this at the flicks or on TV, it's well worth a purchase.
