If You Like Revenge Movies, Get This. I love the film 'MAN ON FIRE', But This Delivers a Twisted Blend Of Comedy & Action, Great Stuff. Written And Directed By Brian Helgeland (L.A Confidential).

"Payback" is one of those highly entertaining movies that make you forget your sorrows for a moment & entertains you right till the end. Difference with most other entertaining movies is that this movie also has a great story!
The movie is completely driven by the main character played by Mel Gibson. He plays a great & fun criminal who is an anti-hero & a total bad guy but still someone for who you can feel & cheer about. The movie also features lot's of other great actors including James Coburn in a very fun role, Kris Kristofferson, Lucy Liu, Bill Duke & David Paymer. The movie is filled with great & entertaining characters.
The story is just great & has quite some nice twists & moments. The movie is comedy like but it also has a wonderful film-noir feeling with a typical atmosphere. There are also some nice action sequences in which Mel Gibson's character might be featured a bit too much as an hero.
See the director's cut - By: TJ Ramsbottom, 06 May 2007 I, along with most other people, enjoyed the theatrical version released in 1999. But what most people won't know is that the entire third act was reshot because the original version was considered too dark. The studio wanted more Lethal Weapon style action & comedy.
Helgeland's released a new director's cut (Payback: Straight Up) on region 1 DVD that reinstates alll the darker moments (the dog dies, the voice-over has been deleted) & the train station ending. Personallly I like both versions but ultimately the new version is the one intended to have been seen & I urge you to check it out.
get ready to root for the bad guy - By: sean paul mccann, 25 Oct 2006 Payback is 1999 movie starring mel gibson as porter who isnt your usual good guy,in fact he is a nasty piece of work callled porter who was double crossed by an old crime partner for his share of $140,000 & left for dead.
From surviving & rebuilding himself through robbing a credit card & getting back his pride so to speak,then porter is ready to face his demons face on & there is are corrupt cops on his tale as well as well as bosses who see porter as a threat.
The film is a revenge movie but is supremely cool & you will cheer gibson on who excels in the evil man with a heart role,with excellent support from lucy liu,gregg henry,kris kristofferson & james coburn this is a movie of brilliance.
a very enjoyable gangster flick - By: Rockstafarian, 05 Sep 2006 Think Lock stock crossed with Lethal weapon 4. payback is a stylish, comic gangster noir. as you may (hopefully) have gathered from the title payback is a film about Mel gibson, a gangster screwed over by two accomplises (one of them happening to be his junkie mrs) & well...not reallly exacting vengance but trying to reclaim the 70.000 dollars that was his share of the money that was taken from him. this film is not serious but very stylish & enjoyable.
