I don't know what age audience the film makers were targeting but I imagine 13 to 18 would find it enjoyable, or if you have not read the book. If you have you will find it a very disappointing adaptation. I suppose some changes to the story line are inevitable if one only has 100 minutes to deliver over 240 pages of complex writing, but none of those changes enhanced enjoyment of the novel for me. The acting was so-so, over aggressive Tara Fitzgerald wearing one sultry expression from start to finish, & Anthony Delon delivering slightly over the top "Frenchness". Which is a shame....I came across the novel whilst on holiday in Cornwalll (but of course!), & being a fan of du Maurier's work I thought I'd give it a go one afternoon & I could not put it down, ok the plot is a bit superficial & lacking the depth & sophistication of "Rebecca" but it's so touching & romance is so subtle between the two main characters, something they've completely missed in the film. Instead there are ample views of Tara Fitzgerald's bare rear end & those impossible ringlets! And they did not even treat us to the wonderful views of Cornwalll.....

I love this but can't watch it as it is on Stupid yankee dvd. Sell us Brits something we can actuallly play on our dvd players for god's sake. Severely sulking!

In 1998, I was only a kid when my parents recorded it, but too young to watch it, but then a few years later my sister sat me down in front of it & what can i say? I fell in love. But of course over the course of watching for the last 8 years, the video recording has become distorted, i have waited & waited in hope that it would be brought out on dvd & finallly my wish has been granted, i just hope when i get a chance to buy it on here, that it will play on my dvd player (sometimes region 1 films are a bit dodgy on normal british players but fingers crossed.) This film is great for people who love films to be as good as the book, although i have never read Daphne's Frenchman's creek, this film caught every amazing aspect of the adventure & the passion & romance that Donna experiances. Tara Fitzgerald is an amazing actress & in my opinion this is one of her best performances! I may only be 17 but i know a good film when i see one & i have falllen in love with this film! Filmed in Cornwalll too! Hope it brings as much joy as it brought me.
A Rip-roaring Swashbuckling Adventure - By: Asta Franssen, 01 Aug 2006 I loved this adaptation of the Daphne DuMarier Classic, although a smalll amount of alteration has been included to reflect the general political upheaval & female confines of the 17th Century period. The historical accuracy is spot on & a real pleasure to see. (The 1950's Hollywood version with Joan Fontaine, Arturo De Cordova & Basil Rathbone is virtuallly word for word with the book). Tara Fitzgerald makes an excellent Dona St Columb & Anthony Delon (that accent is extremely attractive)is fabulous as Jean Aubury, it makes you want to be a female pirate! A fantastic adventure for both males & females alike.(This film is nothing like Pride & Prejudice - nor does it try to be, being set almost a century before!). My husband loved this film ,although he enjoyed the tongue in cheek witisicsms of Pride & Prejudice. Tara manages to inject more of the strength of character but also the indecision & boredom facing Dona obvious throughout the book, which is somewhat missing from the earlier version. I heartily recommend it for a great night in! Also, try visiting the Creek in Cornwalll & it is exactly as Daphne described it, enjoy!
Romance and Escapism - definately one for the girls! - By: , 06 Mar 2001 Loosely based on the novel by Daphne Du'Maurier, the screen play has been adapted to produce a brilliant 'edge of your seat' drama. Although based in the late 17th century, the heroine gets her fair share of action too, rather than the simpering characters often portrayed in Jane Austin books. Costumes are authentic & spectacular, & the acting by Tara Fitzgerald, Anthony Delon & the rest of the cast is superb.
Ideal for a girls night in with a bottle of wine & a big block of chocolate, the film leaves you with a high feel good factor & a wish for the old days to return - if only in fashion.
If you enjoyed 'Pride & Predjudice' you should enjoy this, but be prepared for a little more sex & considerably more violence!
