Dostoyevsky's novella "The Gambler" is here skillfully interwoven with the details of his own life, in a magnificent script by Nick Dear. Although the movie goes off the rails in the last 15 minutes, it is until then an absolutely first-rate translation to the screen of Dostoyevsky's tale of manic obsession & roulette madness. The direction is uneven but the script is sound. When the director shoots the scenes as written, the results are fantastic.
