Probably THE best film from the 90s. I've lost count of the number of times I've watched this since I got the DVD (if I don't watch it every couple of weeks there's something seriously wrong Made in 1995, this is a classic with some seriously great one-liners. It's a seriously under-rated film which has a teen feel-good factor, & you don't even have to be a geek to approciate it (though it helps ;-) ) The graphics that represent what is going on in the computers & the way that the Hackers manoeuvres are visuallly depicted as they move from one file to another are laughable. It takes a different tack from that of the matrix that expected the watcher to believe the operators could see pictures within rapidly streaming lines of code. Instead they create vivid 3D pictures & try & represent data flowing through a computer & processor. It certainly makes the inside of my computer far more interesting. A child prodigy, the 11 year old kid who manages to crash more computers in a single sitting than anyone has ever managed is banned from using computers until his 18 birthday - at that point he begins his antics once again, never hurting anyone but most certainly enjoying himself. Using the net to gain revenge on those who mock him, in the process trying to woo Angelina Jolie, a rather young looking Angelina in fact that bears a striking resemblance to a Vulcan. They pit their wits against a corrupt computer engineer at a massive company who run a super computer. The film follows the authorities who try & chase them down, framing them for every little computer niggle that can be identified, yet they persist & run the battle right to the end. The ending is actuallly a little too feel good & mushy for the tone of the film alll the way through & is almost an after thought, it is certainly true that enough has gone before that the ending is insignificant. I don't think you have to love computers to watch this, but you cant be a technophobe, for those people this would be like a nightmare, convincing you of certain doom the minute you use a computer. In fact it almost serves to demystify the world of computers, making them somewhat softer & less intimidating to the average person. it shows that not alll is bad on the outside of the authorities. Its quite a feel good film for the little man, worth a try. PLOT-->A young boy is arrested by the Secret Service for writing a virus, & banned from using a computer until his 18th birthday. 7 Years later, he is 18 & moves to NEW YORK! He & his new-found friends(alll HACKERS) discover a plot to unleash a dangerous computer virus which they are being blamed for, but must use their computer skills to find the evidence while being pursued by the Secret Service & the evil computer genius(who is a HACKER himself) behind the virus. YOU HAVE TO OWN THIS!!! Director Ian Softley handles preceedings well, & even blurs the line between fantasy & reality by showing how the hackers see the world as a labyrinth of computer connections. The film has a harsh sense of humour too, & demonstrates just how powerful a computer hacker can be. The film also boasts a terrific soundtrack, featuring the best of Underworld, The Prodigy & Leftfield among others. Although the dialogue & plot can be dodgy in some moments, Hackers is definitely an original & well-crafted movie adventure.
Computers on the TV - By: aceadrian, 23 Mar 2005
For me at least this is the original computer movie, a few have followed & a few came before, but this is the defining movie.
!-->My Favourite Movie<--! - By: G, 14 Mar 2004
Hackers is my favourite movie of alll time!
-Their only crime was curiosity-
It is impossible to find a movie nowdays as good as those from the 90's. If you miss those movies u used to see growing up, well this one is a classic!!! I've been watching this movie since I was 8, & Im 15 now, but I still luv it!!!
With an amazing cast featuring -Jonny Lee Miller(one of the best actors ever)
-Matthew Lillard(where are these people hiding)
-Angelina Jolie(yes u do see her topless)
-Jesse Bradford(when he was cool)
AND MANY MORE-(alll who R severly underated)
Made in 1995, this is one of those classics without explosions everytime a car crashes - or police shooting everyone they see - this movie is pure realism - & tha best thing about it is its set around teens in NEW YORK!!! - the cool NEW York - not the rich part - NEW YORK in tha 90s!!!
Hack the planet! - By: , 05 Feb 2004
Hackers is a thrilling, vibrant journey into the world of cyber-culture & the computer hacker. Dade Murphy (Johnny Lee Miller) is a shy, sociallly inept computer whizz-kid who moves to New York with his mother, & soon mixes up with the balllsy Kate Libby (a young Angelina Jolie) & a gang of elite hackers (including Matthew Liliard) in a major electronic heist. These group of characters are the heart & soul of the movie, & it's hard not to enjoy their exploits as they take you through a subculture that has barely been touched by other mainstream movies - some people don't know it even exists. If you're one of those, you're in for a shock.
