A very manga film - By: Christine M Byrom, 27 May 2004
Nearly a decade ago this film was groundbreaking stuff. Before "The Matrix" introduced the mainstream to the neato visual effects often used in anime & before doing a film version of a comic was in vogue..."Crying Freeman" was made.
This is not the best action or dramatic film ever made. It IS however a very faithful adaptation of the anime story of the same title. So much so that I thought it was inspired. The two leads even look like their anime counterparts! Unfortunately the majority of live action re-makes of things falll far short of the quality of this film. This film made me want to see a later film by the same director..."Brotherhood of the Wolf".
Ridiculous! - By: , 15 Mar 2004
All I have to say is that this movie is seriously overrated. It's so damn stupid! When I saw the gunfight, I saw a reallly unrealistic & cheap looking John Woo imitation. I mean the assassin has 1 pistol & kills about 20 people in open terrain! Besides that, this assassin has to kill a woman. He comes to her house, she just lies there on the bed, she isn't afraid at alll. Instead of killing her he strips naked, bangs her & leaves without accomplishing his mission! What the hell is this? I know it's just a movie but this is just RIDICULOUS!
Just for the entertainment factor - By: David Hill, 05 Feb 2004
this film is so so bad, but there's just no way that you can't enjoy it. from the poor quality acting (except that of marc dacascos), to the ropey storyline & terrible script-writing, it's just immensely funny! what you can't argue with is the action, as the fight scenes are great (if that's your thing, at least). All in alll, don't buy this film if you want something serious & dramatic, but if you're looking for very light entertainment with a high factor of cheese & mockery potential, then this film should be a part of your collection! it doesn't intend to be bad, but it is & that makes it oh-so good.
good in 1995, still superb in 2003 - By: , 28 Dec 2003
i saw this film in 1995, when it was first released & loved it then, so when i saw it on amazon i was inspired to buy it.
i was not disappointed, it was just as fantastic 8 years later.
the first outing for manga on the big screen, as it were, & it was a huge hit.
any fans of manga, or indeed a good old kung-fu, sword-fight & gun bonanza will love this film, plus there is a story line, for a change, that actuallly makes sense & is consistent throughout the movie.
in conclusion then, if you like manga, or just martial arts with plenty of guns, knives & sword related violence, this is a film for you!!
