Very disappointing - By: Tarewith, 20 Dec 2004
I was reallly disappointed by this film. After reading the rave reviews elsewhere I thought it would be gripping, but found the characters like 'cardboard cutouts' rather than any great role development taking place. Was some footage cut somewhere? The only great acting came from Sean Bean (as the moody, troublesome brother who's always looking for a fight), but his part isn't that big, so if you're a Bean fan I would suggest buying a different Bean film.
Working-class epic romance - By: Maria Álvarez Folgado, 07 Sep 2003
I feel I can't praise enough this wonderful film based on a novel by Catherine Cookson (which I have not read). The setting in the poor, bleak working-class neighbourhood of Fifteen Streets, in turn-of-the-century Newcastle, is wonderfully good, but especiallly, the acting is superb (do they alll reallly speak that way?). The conflicts that these characters live through in the story change them forever, & you actuallly can see this in the expression on their faces, from hopeful to hopeless, & in the inflection of their voices. This is reallly ACTING at its best. After watching the film we are left with a feeling of respect for these hard workers & their families, who get over misery & bad times thanks to their sense of dignity & (in the case of the main character -who is NOT Sean Bean-) love. Not to miss, even if you are not a romance buff (which I am not).
Great story, great characters! - By: , 18 Jan 2001
I THINK THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST OF CATERINE COOKSON'S STORY'S. OWEN TEAL IS GREAT AS JOHN HE BRINGS THE CHARACTER TO LIFE. YOU CARE ABOUT THEM YOU GET ANGRY AT THEM AND YOU LOVE THEM.
