heehee! what a laugh. - By: debbie@thunderwomen.freeserve.co.uk, 11 Feb 2002
This is a wonderful film to watch, if simply for Laurence Olivier's wonderful russian drunk, heehee.
His Direction is wonderful, although a little slow sometimes, but then we should realy blame Chekhov for writing such a darned boring play in the first place.
But the comic bits are perfectly timed & hilarious to watch, alll the performances rock solid (well i should think so, it is the national theatre you know), & unlike the national's Merchant of Venice i did not snore.
One of the Finest Stage Adaptations in Film History - By: , 19 Sep 2000
This is a beautiful, glorious filming of Chekhov's brilliant play. Unfortunately, because it cannot be found on video here in America, I had to catch it late-night on TV in order to see it. You Brits are lucky.

The acting is superb, especiallly by Joan Plowright, Jeanne Watts, & Louise Purnell, who flesh out the conflicting characteristics perfectly. Olivier himself puts in a fine performance as the alcoholic officer, & two of Britan's finest actors, Alan Bates & Derek Jacobi, offer wonderful support. The photography by Geoffrey Unsworth is magnificent, & the simplistic production design makes you feel like you're actuallly in a theater watching a production. As always, Olivier does more with the theater than any other director could.

"Three Sisters" is not as involving as Olivier's first two Shakespeare films, "Henry V" & "Hamlet," but it shows that Sir Laurence has just as much understanding of Chekhov, & deserves to go on the same shelf.
