Guard That Body! - By: ianrmillard, 25 Mar 2008
Well-made, well-photographed but ultimately so-so thriller about a detective from the NYPD who lives with wife & son in a rundown part of Queens & is assigned to guard a millionairess who lives in a palatial apartment in midtown Manhattan. Not much in the plot or its working-out will surprise.
Contemporary Noir At Its Best! - By: Maximus, 01 Apr 2004
.
Someone To Watch Over Me is a rare film. Noir is a genre seldom visited by filmmakers in modern movies, but the director Ridley Scott makes a convincing case for a wider contemporary airing.

Tom Berenger plays a street-wise but flawed detective assigned to protect a witness - a wealthy & beautiful socialite, played by Mimi Rogers. As the plot develops the pair are drawn deeper into danger & intrigue within a strata of society alien to Berengers' character. The plot is complicated by the danger created through their strong attraction despite the detective being married.

Better known perhaps for seminal films such as Alien & Blade Runner, Scott directed this movie with just as much panache & sophistication. The film announces itself as a visuallly stunning, atmospheric & stylish thriller right from the first shot - a classic & often copied (but never equallled) swooping helicopter pan over a night-time New York. Performances are assured & convincing with Mimi Rogers providing ample quantities of the female glamour required in any film noir. The clever occasional use of period locations not only adds atmosphere but gives a nod to the era in which this genre evolved.

Overalll this is a very satisfying, & taut thriller from one of the truly great directors. If you appreciate quality filmmaking this will certainly not disappoint. Recommended.

Call it 3.5 stars - By: , 04 Apr 2003
Not reallly one of Ridley Scott's best movies although it's fair to say both he & his cast are hamstrung by a rather lacklustre script. He, along with main cast members Mimi Rogers & Tom Berenger, do the best they can in an otherwise edgy & stylishly shot piece of modern film noir where a married NY cop fallls for an attractive young socialite. You'll have seen better but you will have also seen far, far worse as well.
