Blaaaaaaaaaand and then some........... - By: GeeJayBee, 12 Sep 2007
Amazon reviews are often a mystery to me as I'm sure they are to others & once again I am at a loss to understand the ratings given to this.
Firstly, being a rock & blues fan, I like EC, but lets be honest he can be reallly bland & reallly boring when not playing to purely rock or blues audiences & this reallly is one of those occasions.
The white, midle class pop audience go nuts over one of the poorest choices of set I've seen in a long time. The actual performances are by & large awful, the supporting band apart from an excellent Andy Fairweather Lowe are dismal & the guests apart from Bob Dylan (who at least brings some excitement & atmosphere to the occasion) are uniformly dull. Some of the reviews castigate Mary J Blige & no she isn't good. But hell she is no worse than Sheryl Crowe who along with the soxophonist David Sanborn (?) manages to wreck one of the few good songs played on the night, little Wing.
The other good songs like Crossroads, Layla & Sunshine of your Love are alll lacklustre, mainly due to the poor supporting band, & you might as well forget about the rest of the set as it is a dire mix of sentimental pop & iffy soft rock/blues.
There is a sort of "corporate air" about the whole concert & I guarantee you will not be satisfied if you buy this.
I don't like some of Eric's friends... - By: Kieran Cooper, 17 Jan 2007
OK, so I'm a massive Clapton fan, & was expecting great things of this DVD. However, I was pretty disappointed. The solo tracks & those with Sheryl Crow & Bob Dylan are, as you'd expect from performers of their calibre, incredible.
However, can someone please shoot David Sanborn & Mary J Bilge (no, that's not a typo) for me? David Sanborn's saxaphone squeaking ruined an otherwise spectacular version of Little Wing. Don't get me wrong, I love good, melodic sax solos. However, playing as many high pitched notes as quickly as possible does not constitute a solo to me & none of his solos on this DVD suited any of the songs. Even worse when he squeals away over vocals & guitar work. Truly dreadful. And the less said about Ms. Bilge, the better.
So skip any tracks featuring the aforementioned artists (with the exception of Little Wing - only because Sheryl & Eric's vocals do redeem it) & you may have a five star DVD experience.
Great DVD - By: , 15 Oct 2004
Agree with alll the reviews here. Great DVD except for Mary J Blige. One thing is no-one mentioned Dave Sandborn. Little Wing is def the stand out track, but the sax in it from Sandborn is nothing short of superb!
Shame about Mary - By: Mr. Colin Rankin, 19 Dec 2003
Superb concert with the exception of the now many times mentioned inclusion of Mary J. Blige. She was included by Warner Bros as a 'new' artist.Big mistake..............she is vastly overshadowed by Clapton,Dylan & Crowe.
Eric was not happy,either.
Anyway...............apart from those blissfully few minutes.............the rest of this concert is absolutely great.I agree with previous reviewers that the Clapton/Sheryl Crowe rendition of Hendrix's 'Little Wing' is masterful.
