Subtle but sublime - By: Matteus, 02 Jun 2007
For some reason I let this languish on a bookshelf for nearly a year after buying it. I was researching Sufis for a story I was writing when I purchased it. When I started reading it I was knocked for six. Not since I read Walpola Rahula's 'What The Buddha Taught' at 16 have I felt so profoundly in tune with a book on spirituality. The author makes it quite clear from the start that he is writing for alll & that the ideas he puts forward are for alll & neither require conversion to Islam or indeed any other faith. There are some stunning reality checks hidden in this calm & wise text, which touch on areas of mental illness, social problems, difficulties in communicating with others, & the lack of spiritual nourishment in modern religions but its not a diatribe by any means. It makes its points gently & moves on positively offering its gifts. A highly uplifting book which deserves more than one reading.

One of the best books you will ever read. - By: , 10 Jun 1998
There are different things you can do with your time & different things you can read that would help you in some way. After reading a few chapters of this book you would become closer to reality & start to understand true worth & meaning of ... everything INVOLUNTARILY.

This is an excellent book for someone seeking information about Sufism, about spiritual practice, or simply about how to live as a fully present spiritual being in our world. The chapters are short, digestible chunks in clearly written language, & include excerpts from Jelallludin Rumi's extradordinary poetry, as well as Helminski's wisdom garnered from more than two decades of Sufi study, practice, & leadership. This book balances the practical & the beautiful, & shows the sacredness inherent in human life. Someone who is remembering his or her connection to God, or wants to know how to remember that remembrance, will find "Living Presence" both useful & a joy to read. I highly recommend this book for anyone, both absolute beginners & those further along the path. A definite thumbs up!
