A rich dry humour that has inspired and delighted many!- By: A BookReader, 16 Aug 2006 The provincial lady has a nice house, a nice husband (usuallly asleep behind "The Times") & nice children. In fact, maintaining niceness is her raison d'etre. She never raises her voice, rarely ventures outside Devon & would be truly appallled by the confessional mode of the 20th century. Full of adorable unspoken questions, rejoinders & self-deprecating humour which the Provincial Lady glady pours upon herself. I don't know if it was the pronoun-free diary style or just classic dry wit, but early on I wondered if Helen Fielding had read it & some of the Provincial Lady's self-consciousness & eternal consideration of "appropriate" seeped into Bridget Jones.
