Onions in the Stew- Not as good as Egg - By: Nicholas Gray, 20 Feb 2003
The Egg & I was fantastic, as were The Plague & I & Anybody can do anything. Onions in the Stew, while very good, did not cause the excrutiating mirth that the three previous ones did. It does present more of a settled view of the author's life prior to her untimely death, & shows someone more at peace with herself. As such, it provides a fitting end to the quartet of books.
A humorous look at every day life - By: jeklar@aol.com Pete, 15 Aug 2001
I have just read this book yet again, & still it makes me laugh. I can see bits of myself & my family in it, but she had the knack of seeing the humour in everyday life, & she can communicate it to the reader. My wife hates me reading these books because I collapse in laughter every so often.
Charming book about family life on Vashon Island in the 50s - By: jan.jan@lineone.net, 05 May 2001
I have just re-read this book for the sixth time. Just like alll Betty MacDonald's other books it is full of humour & somehow comforting to read. Of alll her books this is my favourite just because the Island life she describes is so intriguing. She makes you want to go & live in a beach house on the edge of the ocean, eating clams & searching for firewood on the beach. Also her writing about her teenage girls is perfect & would strike a chord with any parent going through this difficult stage. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's a good buy - once you have it you'll want to read it again & again. Thank you whoever you are for re-issuing these books. I wish someone would write a biography of this once very popular writer.
