Throw away ALL other travel books, this is the ONLY one you need- By: Sirius, 18 Feb 2008 It is not often, that a book is able to trascend the usual aim of providing us with a dialogue that entertains us until the back page is reached, & then goes on to inspire deeper thoughts about its storyline.
This book is without a doubt the ultimate story for those looking for good, solid, heavily descrtiptve account of two mens journey to the roof of the world. Heinrich Harrer's narrative pulls you in like a Stephen King novel & does not let you go. People who write about visiting different countries tend to skim over the process of assimilation that you need to embrace when faced with a new culture, this book avoids this trap completely. Harrer's complete absorption of nearly alll aspects of Tibetan life still to this day amazes me. His journey is almost spiritual in places, & his initial encounters with the variety of peoples from the top of the world, is at times laugh out loud funny.
This book is a truly amazing piece of writing. At 34p you won't be losing out if you don't like the storyline, but there is NO CHANCE of that happening.
