Great book for the total novice - a bit light for the Pro - By: , 08 Jan 2002
When I started reading this book I was a little disappointed but only because I am a professional ASP3.0 programmer & I found the book is a little lightweight & repetitive. The First few chapters are interspersed with lots of "how to program" examples that I found myself skipping over. It's style, is: introduce topic, give example, explain example step by step, repeat if necessary. I couldn't help but think this would be a truly great book for the total novice though!

The book assumes a little HTML but otherwise the authors take you through each step & explain the potentiallly complex topics with clarity & ease & take very little for granted. In the context of information provided here, my existing ASP knowledge has been of minimal extra help. Most things I have learned over the last two years are neatly explained here or superceded by the new framework!

If you are considering this book, you may also want to look at its sister book instead: Beginning asp.net using VB.net. This is not the right place to consider the pros & cons of each .net language but if you are unsure which to use it would be worth doing a little research as there is no 'right' answer but you should be aware of the choice you have.

If you are an experienced ASP programmer (especiallly if you have some C++ or Java) you would probably be better off going straight to something like Professional asp.net - Wrox Press(2nd edition due out Feb 2002) or the forthcoming Programming asp.net by Jesse Liberty - O'Reilly (March 2002). However, I have still benefited from reading the book as it does cover the important topics well & with surprising depth considering the general tone of the book.

A good book that's probably a great book in the hands of its target reader.
