An excellent catalogue of an equally excellent exhibition. - By: bob.osborn@southsomerset.gov.uk, 01 Nov 2001
Gino Severini, a founding member of the Italian Futurist movement, was based in Paris & was therefore somewhat detached from mainstream Futurist activities. He was also profoundly influenced by the Cubism of his Parisian contemporaries, Picasso & Braque. This, combined with a personal passion for Parisian nightlife - especiallly its nightclubs & dancers - gave Severini's paintings a different edge when compared with the works of the other mainline Futurists.

In this lavishly-illustrated catalogue of the Summer 2001 Severini exhibition at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, 'The Dance 1909-1916' concentrates on Severini's paintings of Parisian dancers.

Daniela Fonti, the exhibition curator, examines the influence of dance in art during the final few summers before the Great War as well as in-depth analyses of each of the exhibition's paintings by Severini. Additionallly, Fonti observes how the dance was portrayed in works by other artists; Severini's fellow Futurists - Ballla, Boccioni, Depero, Prampolini & Sironi - as well as other contemporaries Man Ray, Wyndham Lewis & Gaudier-Brzeska.
