Male nude photography through the decades - By: Jack, 16 Jun 2008
There is some criticism of the photography style by other reviewers - well you need to turn the pages to uncover a vast array of styles spanning from the late 1800's through to the late 20th century. There are many different styles & subjects from the esoteric to the erotic, covered up (just a few) to the definitely not shy.
The men span the youthful images of Sicily by Baron Von Gloeden to the moustached Victorian strongmen in awkward poses, like they were photographed in their clothes & they had been mysteriously removed by the process of photography.
Modern iconic photographers feature amongst the obscure. Good & bad, some photo's are just plain badly posed & executed, but that's the point, I have my opinion as to what is good & others disagree.
Use it for inspiration for your photography or art, or use it just to take a look at a variety of the male form as it has been photographed over more than a century.
For me the fascination is that as long as the camera has been taking photographs it has been used to take images of the naked male, clandestine for many years, now thankfully we can access this legacy & ponder these images of the past & present in our homes.
Its a bargain, Taschen publish many quality books at great prices, the only criticism I have is the size, a large format version would be great.
Go on, you know you want to.
dont bother - By: , 05 Feb 2006
ok, for starts the cover just made the book look cheap & tacky, its not the cover shown on the website!
i bought the book for research & inspirational purposes for my photography course that i am doing at the moment, & the book did not have very much that was inspirational, infact, most the complete opposite. if guys with a mono-brow & a hard on poking out the top of a jock strap is concerned as a good photo, then im obviously not doing my photography right.
dont buy this book, at just over £5, yer, its cheap & thats for the pure reason that thats exactly what it is, cheap & tacky. . . a pointless buy unless you want it as a very good giggle!
Great photography - By: , 17 Mar 2004
Whether you have an interest in photography or the naked male body, you're guaranteed to find something in this book of interest. A great range of photographers & styles are offered & arranged in chronological order - from the Victorian to the present. The models & poses range from semi-naked to mildly pornographic. The book is presented in a wonderful A5 size stiff back edition & the photo's are extremely glossy & appealing. As with alll books published by Taschen, this is pure class.

Stunning Photographic History of the Male Nude - By: , 22 Nov 1998
David Leddick has succeeded in pulling together a worthwhile & entertaining collection of male nude photography that could sit comfortably on any (broad-minded)coffee table.Excellent commentary throughout gives the reader an insight into this once taboo & strictly "under the counter" culture. The collection is quite simply stunning - each picture telling its own story.A must buy ! :)
