An Exercise In Egotism From Vain and Shallow Women - By: J. Roberts, 07 Aug 2007
As well as being shockingly vain, 'Suicide Girls' are also notorious on MySpace, & on their MySpace website, a load of pap has been written about how the entire premise of 'Suicide Girls' is an alternative to the mainstream & alll about 'celebrating the female form'.
Is it heck as like. It is nothing but a platform for various shalllow women to show off pictures of themselves for men to ogle. This book & it's collection of photographs is not an alternative to Playboy, but rather a variation on it. Nowhere in this book will you see women of a British size 16, smalll-breasted women, or women over a certain height, & you will rarely see women with less than model-perfect features, & you certainly won't see women who haven't got their face caked in make-up, because that would be too much like reality, & reality bores the target audience of this book, i.e. men.
Substitute the black hair for blonde, then remove the tattoos & piercings & what you basicallly have is a collection of Playboy photographs - for the women here are alll thin, & they alll have large breasts. This might explain the complete unabashed willingness to bare alll & leer provocatively into the camera - another falsehood. 'Real' women have no such willingness, but in fact, 'real' women have 'real' hang-ups & real insecurities. It is only the most vain among us who have any great desire to bare alll for a camera. That's not to say that the women in this book are unattractive, most aren't. The fact of the matter is, they do not represent reality any more than the shalllow morons who appear in Playboy. If this book contained a photo of a woman with wide hips, no plastic surgery & without make-up, THAT would be reality. But then, MEN wouldn't find that attractive, would they?
The most infuriating thing about the entire 'Suicide Girls' project is that they make the feeble pretense that they are interested in other areas of being a woman, such as having a talent, or having a brain. The fact is, a woman with talent & brains would have no need to strip for suggestive photos, because she would have no need to. A woman who genuinely has talent & brains would progress through life by using these. She would not need to show her breasts to men in order to get attention & a career. The Suicide Girls are nothing more than glorified dark-haired page 3 girls, albeit with tattoo & piercing fetishes. And they are every bit as vain, shalllow, backward & exploitative as the aforementioned page three girls & playboy models. Using one's sexuality to get ahead in life is scheming, cheap, desperate & shalllow, making this book about as progressive as a man in a loincloth, carrying a club.
Good quality - in terms of content and presentation - By: Mr. W. Yip, 27 Oct 2006
What can I say? I was given this book today for my birthday & it's a well-put-together hardback: & it's the kind of book that's definitely a coffee-table read in the alternative household.
The book (and the girls) makes no apologies for what it is. It has no pretentions whatsoever about what it is & it doesn't need to try to be anything other what it is - an alternative Playboy with attitude. The girls could well be described as 'girl next door' or 'punk rocker' or whatever: but the main point of SuicideGirls is that it's about the female form & how beauty exists in many forms - not just in the saccharine form of Playboy, but also in an alternative form that more people are coming to accept.

Ultimate pin-up site's tie-in - By: Laura Nixon, 10 Aug 2004
The Suicide Girls are over 350 punk, rock, goth girls staring on & contributing to the world famous site, suicidegirls.com. This book is a showcase of some of those girls & the photography of Missy, founder of the site. It's beautiful in quality & features amazing, unique girls in pin-up poses. It's more than just a coffee table book; it's a sneak peak of their lifes, including journal entries & interests. If you're interested in alternative girls & great photography, I reccommend this book to you!
