Extraordinary work - By: Lucy, 16 Jul 2008
I have read dozens of books on the subject of nutrition & health, but this is the only one that has had a profound & permanent effect on me. Everything in this book just made sense. The writing is clear, intelligent & surprisingly passionate, & I was utterly hooked from the first page to the last. It's impossible to ignore the hundreds of scientific studies that point to a direct relationship between what we eat & the state of our health. These studies are presented in an easy to understand manner & the writer maintains a scientific detachment that alllows the reader to make up his or her own mind. There are chapters on different types of chronic diseases, backed up with scientific research that will leave you in no doubt that most of these diseases are entirely avoidable.
This book made me realize for the first time that an animal based diet is directly linked to chronic diseases & cancer, & that I must take responsibility for my health. I had always been suspicious of milk products & knew that they caused more harm than good, but giving them up was always an uphill struggle - not any more!
This book has given me hope because many of our modern diseases can be reversed with appropriate diet & a long & healthy life is within our reach. Since reading this book I have made radical changes to my diet (which I had never been able to do before) & have a new found respect for my body & the food I put in it.
This is truly an important & profound work that will revolutionise your thinking & eating habits. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Mind Blowing - By: Anne Davies, 11 Apr 2008
I bought this book as I was sick of going from one diet to another trying to be consistant with my weight loss.
I read a previous review which stated the reader had changed the way she ate but had never enjoyed food since.
I read the whole book over three days, reading the chapters that interested me the most first. There were a few chapters I thought I would never get around to.
However the book enthrallled me. I read it alll. The studies are incredible & although the author tries to explain why his results haven't been broadcast from the top of every building I am still unsure why I haven't heard this before
Anyway like the previous review writer I don't think I will touch animal products again. I may not lose weight but I will be a darn sight healthier

Risks of animal based proteins - By: Tenna Merchent, 24 Jan 2008
The primary theme of this book is that animal based proteins affect the rate of cancer in any given population. He does also consider other things such as fiber, & has important findings in this area, but overalll, the animal protein was the most startling.
In the introduction he explains how he worked in the Philippines when he was on the faculty at Virginia Tech. Their goal was to improve childhood malnutrition by making sure the children were getting as much protein as possible, in particular animal based protein. But, this led to a startling discovery, the children that consumed the most protein were also the most likely to develop liver cancer!
He then found a study from India, saying in essence, the same thing. They had fed two groups of rats a cancer causing agent, but one group was given 20% protein while the other was given only 5%. 100% of the rats fed a diet of 20% protein developed liver cancer, while none of the rats on the 5% diet developed cancer.
My initial thought was "What about vegetarians?" But many of them consume a large amount of animal based proteins in the form of milk, yogurt, cheese & eggs, which are alll on his "avoid" list.
This blew away everything he had been taught about nutrition. He eventuallly goes on to study the subject in the laboratory for 27 years funded by sources such as the National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society, & the American Institute for Cancer Research.
His research showed that they could virtuallly turn on & off cancer growth by changing the level of protein consumed. This was a shocking discovery to say the least, one that eventuallly ends him up on a watch list funded by those who profit from the sale of animal protein.
There were other interesting insights, such as peanuts are often contaminated with a fungus produced toxin callled aflatoxin (AF). AF is said to be the most potent chemical carcinogen. Carcinogen simply means that the item has been found to cause cancer. He went on to get a grant to study the subject & found that peanut butter would have levels of AF as high as 300% above what was considered safe. Whereas the cocktail peanuts level of AF was within acceptable parameters. The conclusion was, the good peanuts were being sorted out at the factor to go in the jars of nuts, & the worst & moldiest nuts were made into peanut butter.
There is of course political intrigue, because whenever you shake a financial tree like the meat producers, watch out what fallls on your head. I felt like he handled this difficult aspect of his career with dignity, & didn't become a "Everybody's out to get me!" person. Instead, he continued on with his important research.
It is a somewhat heavy read but provides many insights into today's illnesses of affluence.
