You cannot learn TM in a book - By: J. R. Marriott, 12 Sep 2006
By nature I am an incredibly sceptical person however for some reason I decided to complete a TM course (3 days ago!). I am so glad I did & I am already feeling the benefits. However please don't buy this book expecting that it will teach you TM. You can only learn TM from a teacher. The reasons from that are 1) you will be given a mantra by your teacher that is suitable for you. Different mantras suit different people. 2) you need to discuss your meditation experience with the teacher & the group & be guided in your meditation. Yes the official TM movement is expensive - but you don't have to go to them for instruction. There are other providers trained by Maharishi who change fees based on income. I am now going to buy this to support by TM practice. If you decided to follow TM good luck!
Detailed but a little disappointing. - By: Geoffrey S Nunn, 31 Mar 2005
As someone trying to understand the various forms of world meditation, this book seemed like a good opportunity to look into the subject of TM. Indeed the author is well placed to write a book on this subject given his background (which included going to India for a yesr to thoroughly learn his subject). So far so good. However, the disapointing aspect of the book is when you arrive at the chapter that you believe will explain the method of TM, you are then informed that this is something that cannnot be written down but only learned in the appropriate setting. Therefore this book gives a wonderful account of the philosophy behind TM but nothing on the technique. I would only recommend to the initiated.
