Very hard going - By: B. Judge, 06 Aug 2008
Having read most recent winners of the Miles Franklin Award & loved nearly them alll, I was hoping that the 2006 winner would have the same effect on me. Undaunted by the 500 odd pages, I found this to be a very difficult read indeed. There is no discernible plot & the characters, espciallly white characters are caricatures, the stuff of a black man's nightmare. With character names like Norm Phantom, Mr Bruiser the mayor & Constable Truthful, it is difficult to discern any attempt at character development. I came away pretty with the impression that alll white men do in Northern Australia is beat black men & rape black women...for fun. I rarely give up on reading a book, but 120 pages was alll the torture I could take!
Revealing a world in front of our eyes. - By: Dr. J. F. M. Oldham, 05 Jul 2008
Alexis Wright takes us on a wild Disney ride through unfamiliar country & extraordinary communities. The scenes & the people spring to life as we galllop through.

Australians blur their eyes when confronted with traces of aboriginal culture; we see them as leftovers from a failed history. The hybrid culture in Carpentaria is a funny, exuberant vision.
