The only practical and useful management book - By: H. J. Adams, 18 Sep 2007
This is a great book. I have read some rubbish over the years in an attempt to shape my personal development, but never found anything truly accessible, let alone practical.
I find this book genuinely insightful. The well researched psychology that underpins it gives it a real point of difference. It is written in a tone that avoids the usual drowsiness & the mix of business & sports analogies reallly bring the book alive (and make it interesting). Chapter 5 is great. I reallly relate to the first paragraph of page 81 & I have done the following exercises & they reallly do make a tangible (and intangible!) difference. No hesitation - well worth buying !!
Invaluable to my coaching practise - By: Mark G, 20 Jun 2007
I have found 'Developing Mental Toughness' to be an invaluable help to my coaching practise. This is not a book that you just read once. The clear layout, excellent case studies & 'In a nutshell' summaries mean that you can pull it off the shelf & prepare for coaching sessions in minutes.

In particular, the tools provided in the chapters on Staying strong in your self-belief' & 'Making your motivation work for you' have generated excellent discussions in coaching sessions, & received great feedback from my coachees.
Now I know where my self belief is I can take better care of it - By: Charlie 1, 08 Jun 2007
The mixture of the theoretical & the experiential makes this book an enjoyable & informative read. The authors calll on their own rich experience & use insights & strategies drawn from performing, coaching, psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy & sports psychology.

I particularly liked Chapter 5 - 'Staying strong in your self-belief'. This Chapter was quite a revelation & helped me make sense of how self belief is internal & constant & mostly unshakable, whilst levels of confidence can be battered & bruised by other people & working life in general.

I will be re-reading chapter 5 regularly & always before a big day.

Practical and Inspirational - By: Dr. S. Hybart, 30 May 2007
I can't recommend this book to you enough. I normallly find management books either shalllow or dull, but this one is neither. It's clearly founded on the experiences of the authors in sport & in the work of their company, Lane4 - it has credibility & depth. It's also a very accessible & interesting read. The guidance offered in the book can readily be put into practice (at work & at play) - I've dipped into various chapters & been able to apply techniques to myself & to my team with results .... & without paying Lane4's consultancy fees! Thank you Professor Jones!
Absolute Quality - By: K. J. Warriner, 27 Apr 2007
Developing Mental Toughness is a compelling, dynamic and, overalll, informative read. Normallly I'm quite slow to finish a book but I devoured this in a couple of days. The book is based on the premise that Mental Toughness alllows people to not only manage pressure, but actuallly thrive on it & deliver sustained high performance. This message is relayed to business & life through the metaphor of elite sport. And the best bit... mental toughness is not limited to elite athletes & senior executives - the book has helped me appreciate how I can develop it too!

The book is packed with strategies, techniques & exercises that can help you develop the key components of mental toughness. These relate to staying strong in your self-belief; focussing on the things that matter; making your motivation work for you; & keeping your head under pressure. I genuinely believe that the simple models & original techniques contained in this book could revolutionise many facets of your life. It would also be invaluable for anyone seeking to facilitate others in the delivery of sustained high performance. Hugely relevant in today's pressurised world; the book strikes an impressive balance between academicallly rigorous research & thought-provoking insights from elite sport & top business.

I would recommend it to people in business, sport & anyone looking to generallly develop a psychological edge in life.
