Piper by Helen McCabe - By: Jon Clarke, 14 Nov 2008
Piper is certainly a dark book & clearly based on extensive research. The beginning of the book is set in a smalll farming village in Romania. The ritualistic & superstitious culture of its people is particularly well thought out; before moving on to the main plot set in the USA.
This book certainly draws you in, & leaves you thinking about it long after it's put down. The tale of the Pied Piper is very well known, however Helen McCabe has successfully created a totallly new & original take on things.
Not everything is given away, there is clearly more to come in the sequel. All in alll, a good read! I would strongly recommend you don't skip Robert Browning's poem included at the end of the book, a few little pennies drop...

As a great fan of the poem The pied piper, I was very intrested to read a adult horror follow on to this poem. I enjoyed the story very much & look forward to the The Piercing to find out more of the story. A Great Read..
Great premise, inconsistent quality - By: S. J. Arnold, 12 Nov 2008
The premise for this adult follow-on to the Pied Piper fairy tale is very interesting & has so much potential; clearly the book has been very well researched, & there's no question that the subject matter is very dark & sinister indeed. However what could have been a riveting & terrifying read is let down simply by inconsistent quality of writing: the author is trying to present events from the protagonists' perspective, & alters her style according to events set either in Romania or the US, but the US-based section in particular is slow, cliched, & reallly not well written. I was on the point of becoming completely infuriated when I finished the book, given the lack of explanation for most key parts of the story, until I realised there is a sequel. I would like to read the next one just to fill in the gaps; it would be great not to be distracted by the changeable quality of the narrative next time.
A compelling read - By: Minskip, 12 Nov 2008
This is a very dark book. A horrifying story brilliantly told. Helen McCabe describes chillingly the power of evil & keeps the reader in suspense right to the last page. A compelling read.

A real page turner. I don't normallly read scary stuff but I couldn't put this book down, even if it did leave me with nightmares!
