Note to my 'management' : Read this book (Please) - By: Bill Gibson, 22 Aug 2008
This is a must-read book for management, directors & anyone with a non-sales background who gets involved with sales in their company. I am a fan of this author & his two previous 2006 books on Cold Callling & Presenting were very very practical. This new publication explains & illustrates the process of human persuasion & how sales are often messed-up by well meaning management saying the wrong thing (albeit with the best of intentions) at just the wrong moment. I found that it can be read in a couple of hours & in that time anyone can discover loads of little skills that can make alll the difference.
The most useful item on my first read through was how to write an effective sales-letter. The author uses an example based on an actual 'top' estate agent's sales letter sent to his house. Having dissected it's awfulness "Don't hesitate to contact us" he reassembles it into a strong & readable calll to action. Very good book. Buy it.
(His other books are "Presentation Skills for Quivering Wrecks", "Cold Callling for Chickens" & "Negotiating Skills for Virgins")
Selling Skills for Complete Amateurs - By: A F Tolkein, 17 Jun 2008
This book is a breath of fresh air. It provides practical techniques that just about anyone going into selling can use straightaway. I reallly liked the style of his writing, both witty & persuasive. The examples & stories that he uses makes it easy to understand & extremely memorable. As a Managing Director, I have never had any real sales training and, having read this book, I can see exactly where I've been going wrong now. It made me realise that even I need to know the basics of how to sell. I would like to meet the author in person & find out what he can do for my company.
