If you don't take it too seriously.............you might like it - By: Misuzmama, 12 May 2008
Prior to reading this book, I read reviews & was not impressed. Seriously, I thought that I would hate this book. Just some bad teen romance melodrama. But now that I've read it, I've altered my opinion. Here's why:
The book is basicallly a vampire teen romance, about a teenage girl who moves from Phoenix to an isolated town in Washington to be with her single father. There she meets a gorgeous & smart guy, who happens to be a ...you guessed it.....a vampire!.......and from there an adventure begins.
First of alll, I don't reallly care for books written in the first person, but it didn't seem to bother me as much here. Meyer (author) does a good job conveying the action & emotions of the other characters, as well as the settings, so nothing was lost there.
I have to agree that Bella is a bit shalllow & shelf centered, but heck! aren't MOST teenagers? (hang with me here for a second) You'd expect that they WOULD believe that they ARE the center of the universe & invincible (I seem to have some fuzzy memories of this ;)). So why would anyone expect Bella to act in a rational manner, especiallly when she is in love (for the first time I might add), is beyond me. And who in the world wouldn't falll for Edward! He's a) gorgeous b)intelligent c)wealthy & d)he can kick a*s!. He has a typical bad boy image which many women (young & old) would be attracted to.
And the fact that Bella needs to be rescued constantly? Well I liked it! It just showed more of Edward flexing his muscles (and reallly, what girl doesn't want to read about that!). It doesn't make Bella stupid. She's clutzy to begin with & most of the things that happen are in no way her fault for bringing them about. So to the naysayers I say -cut her some slack.
For people looking for a moral message, well there is NONE. That's not what this book is about. I assume the readers are intelligent enough to realize that growing old is not a fate worse than death (there are benefits -trust me ;)) & life is worth living without a man. I mean reallly, don't girls in the first throws of love think their man IS the center of the universe & would 'DIE' without him. Thats just how it is -you think about him alll the time. Sheesh! Get a clue! Readers know this! If teenagers are sensible enough to be reading books instead of zoning out on Xbox or whatever, then give them credit to realize that this book is NOT trying to send a message. And because well -hello!- vampires are not real! This is simply a teen vampire romance & a well written one at that.
So even though I won't be reading the sequels (I prefer edgier & broodier vampires like in Cole's IAD series) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this YA book to a teenager for a good read. This is not ground-breaking stuff, but its fun to read. And I'm sure if I were a teen, I'd be in be head over heels in love with Edward & scrambling to get alll the sequels too.
Recommended.
Good but far from great - By: K. J. Verma, 07 May 2008
I had high hopes for this one seeing as everyone seems to love it. And I was hooked by the premise.
To be honest, I never reallly warmed up to Bella or Edward for that matter. At first it was fine, it was intriguing. I was waiting for the moment she would find out about Edward. Up until that point, alll good, though the numerous references of Edward's eyes, gracefulness & the fact she was dizzy around him alll the time started to wear thin reallly quickly. But when she does find out - which was a little of an anti-climax for me - it wasn't much.
The best parts came in the last 150 pages when finallly the book began get some momentum & Bella actuallly became interesting - & there was action!! I always thought there was something missing in the romance - I wanted to go beyond Edward's good looks, his charm & his eyes & the fact that he was 'dazzling'. Alright we get he's a god in her eyes...reallly.
The emotions conveyed by Meyer are very vivid though, you can't help but be completely absorbed. And there's some good humour amongst it alll. If I'm going to read the other books, I'll be more interested in characters like Jacob & Billy. But somehow I think Bella is always going to be Edward obsessed...I hope there will be some good separation between them at some point to spice this story up a bit.
Believe what you've heard, this book is great! - By: DevJohn01, 07 May 2008
For a long time I had been reluctant to read 'TWILIGHT'. On the surface it does sound like something that I would be interested in & the pretty cover, I will admit, kept drawing me in, however, the plot just did not pique my interest. However, on another book lovers site I asked the users if I should read this book & the result was a resounding "OMG you MUST read this book!" & this was coming from the adults! So with that said I immediately ordered it & still it sat on my shelf for well over a month. Finallly I decided to give it a go, & once I picked it up I was utterly unable to put it down! Now with my life as hectic as it is these days I have found it hard to find time to read at alll, but I was easily knocking out 100 pages of 'TWILIGHT' a day, forgetting alll about the pile of laundry in the corner...it wasn't going anywhere. So this review is for anyone who is on the fence about reading Stephanie Meyer's stunning debut, my answer is now a resounding "OMG you MUST read this book!"
Very Surprised - By: M. B. Mason, 04 May 2008
When i first bought this book i stupidly thought it was a horror, simply because of the mention of vampires. I am so happy i was wrong. When i found out this book was a love stroy i thought i wouldnt like it, simply becaus im a guy. However this simply is one of the best books i have ever read. The characters are extremely real & loveable & i love it how meyer (author) lulls you into a false sense of security thoroughout the book so when something bad happens (I wont spoil it dont worry) It is reallly suprising & kind of hard to deal with. i finished this book the day after i got it at 3 in the morning because i simply couldnt but it down. BUY THIS BOOK ITS INCREDIBLE!!!.
Not bad, but not outstanding - By: Karen Michelle, 01 May 2008
I've read a lot of positive reviews on this site praising this book, & while I agree that it's not terrible, I don't think it's necessarily as good as the hype.
Firstly, I'll start with the parts I did enjoy (there may be some spoilers here):
I reallly enjoyed the beginning, & the first 200(ish) pages with the description of rainy Forks setting the scene, & starting a new school, & the creepy gang of teenagers sitting on their own in the cafeteria. This alll set the scene well & I liked the way Edward was a mystery at first, glaring at Bella. It immediately enticed the reader.
The things I disliked was the middle when Bella & Edward started hanging out together. I found their dialogue incredibly dull & erratic - like one minute they were being alll soppy & the next Edward (or Bella) was 'snapping' or saying something 'angrily'. There was far, far too much description about the way in which the characters were speaking & it left me, as a reader, feeling frustrated & confused as to whether the characters were angry or happy or god knows what.
Bella & Edward's relationship also seemed very superficial & somewhat insecure, as they were either confessing their undying love or arguing about how Edward should stay away from Bella as Edward could kill her yada yada yada. It made you think whilst reading it - if they argue this much then what's the point of being together!? It was very repetitive & they just went over the same ground again & again. By the middle of the book I almost wanted to give up as I disliked both Bella & Edward & found them dull characters with not much likeability factor.
There was, however, a saviour in alll of this & that came with the proper introduction of Edward's vampire family & the 'tracker'. Finallly - some excitement & not just drab schmaltz! Here the reader was introduced to characters such as Alice, who had so much potential & was very likable, as was Jasper & Emmett. I would definitely have liked to have read more about Rosalie - I found her very intriguing. It's such a shame they only reallly came into the story towards the end as I would've liked to have learnt much more about them. I understand that in the later books there may be more about them but I don't reallly want to read those after this one.
This book is okay & I may recommend it to others, but equallly I think there are better teen vampire stories out there such as The Night World series by L.J Smith, which are more fast-paced & exciting, with more likable characters.
