John Coleman... - By: Sheleen Hems, 19 Mar 2007
I met John Coleman... in fact, I spent many an hour with the gentleman. He was my English teacher in senior school.
He is a softly-spoken man with a keen mind, & he has a way of speaking that just makes you want to sit & listen. He introduced us (the English class) to his book "Coleman's Drive" after we failed miserably to be interested in the course work we were supposed to be doing. Once opened, it is difficult to put the book down. It tells of John Coleman, driving from Buenos Aires to New York in a 1925 Austin 7 Chummy. Through terrain of desert, mountain & jungle, Coleman lets his reader into a world of fascination, humour & (it must be said) some risk.
I had a signed copy of this book, & whilst moving home, it was lost - but I'd certainly buy & read it again. It's written by a true gentleman, with a sense of spirit & adventure sadly lacking in todays society...
I never knew what happened to Mr Coleman after I left school - but I do know that the car (1925 Austin 7 Chummy) sat happily for many a year (and may still do) at the Beaulieu Motor Museum.
