Funny, Witty, Good read - By: Sminny, 02 Aug 2003
I read this book while staying in a cottage further down the vallley to the one described in the book. After reading the book, I wanted to find the house just to see how remote it was & if the other places mentioned reallly did exist. Well, it does!! Its amazing, the women in the book must have been sooo fit!! Its 3 miles up the vallley but when I say up I mean up!! The book is so well written that I could imagine the places & then to see them in the flesh so to speak was truely memorable. Even if you dont get to see this beautiful part of Wales you can appreciate the shear determination of these two women.
A realistic description of one woman's escape into mid-Wales - By: adriantebby@btinternet.com, 21 May 2001
This is not a book about giving everything up to live in the country. The author is not able to achieve this dream, but tells us of her house in remote mid-Wales that she buys, & retreats to during her school teachers holidays. Making her own furniture & stopping the house from fallling down occupies most of her time, along with collecting the weekly shopping on foot from the nearest town several miles away. There is plenty of time for relaxation however, & many descriptions of the wildlife & landscape of this area are combined with the everyday aspects of life. Set in the 1940s, this is a good book to read to encourage, or discourage you from this particular lifestyle!
