Mad Max seeks Dark Tower... - By: minervathene, 18 Nov 2006
I like David Gemmell's books for telling a story without any unnecessary waffle. This is no different: in 300-odd pages tells a tale that would have taken three 1000-page epics from another author! There are clear moments when I was aware of 'missing' psychological explorations & deep musings on the whys & wherefores of the characters' thoughts & feelings - aware, but not desperately sad to miss them!

The story itself brought to mind elements of Mad Max, with a hefty dollop of Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Jon Shannow is a gunslinger; he's chasing his Jerusalem rather than a Dark Tower, but still the same broad themes.

Shannow lives several hundred years in our future, when Armageddon has reset civilisation to that of about 1850s America. Think pioneers & horses, outlaws & guns. Shannow himself is on a self-imposed quest, to find some meaning to life. He's a 'man of the book', bringing justice to brigands & quoting bible passages (strictly old testament!) as he blows holes in them. But can even he stand up to a 300-year-old man who has mastered the sipstrassi bloodstones, rock fragments imbuing the holder with magical powers?

As I said, it's quite a pared down story, cramming in action without pausing for too much reflection. Which makes a nice change, reallly! And despite being one of three Jerusalem Man books, Wolf In Shadow stands alone quite nicely, finishing with a surprisingly satisfactory rounding off.

Recommend to those who like this genre, for a light but suitably engrossing read.

short sharp and full of action - By: genejoke, 09 Aug 2006
This is much like one of Gemmells other works waylander. although the setting is different, there are some obvious parralllels. which I won't go into as they are so obvious.
The book follows jon shannow a slightly mad gun fighter who seeks jeruselum & a meaning to his life.
This is classic Gemmell nothing more nothing less.
Wolf in Shadow - By: , 19 Feb 2004
If you want to know what the world will reallly be like 7000 years into the future then you have to buy this book. It has betrayal, love, violence, twists & turns. You'll be drawn in so fast you wont realise you've just finished the book. Then without warning you will feel the unstoppable urge to buy the next book in the trilogy.
I cant urge you enough to buy this book!
If you love a hero with a dark side you are gonna love this - By: , 16 Apr 2002
this is the first David Gemmell book I read , & I have since in the space of two months read another three. The main character Jon Shannow is a dark hero much in the role of Roland of Gilead in the Stephen King "Dark Tower" series. A Religous man , brought into conflict based on his endless search across a wasted earth , laid desolate by the toppling of the world due to a natuarl disaster.Searching for the New jerusalem as described in the bible after armageddon. A natural warrior with pistols. not just speed but technique, he never draws without provocation, much to his distress this doesnt stop other people causing provocation.
Great battle, cannibals, atlantis, redemption, love a fantastic novel from a fantastic author. there are also two other Shannow novels folowing on , continuous use of a characters is a trait i love in a writer. Buy this book you will not regret it
A excellent read - By: , 08 Aug 2001
I have just started reading David Gemmell's books & have been enjoying them immensely. However, I felt that 'Wolf in Shadow' was not as good as some of his other books, particuallly 'Hero In the Shadows', 'Midnight Falcon' & 'Legend of Deathwalker'. But dispite this it is still a brilliant read which I would reccommend. 'Wolf in Shadow' is about Jon Shannow, a Brigand hunter, who is searching for the fabled city of Jersualm ( lost years ago after the world suffered a string of natural disasters)... The book is set in the future & on earth, though at first you don't realise this. A excellent read.
