Highly recommended - By: C. Manson, 28 Jun 2008
I cannot describe how much I loved this book. This is a profoundly moving & vivid account of the author's experiences directing musical projects in post-war Bosnia. I laughed & cried my way throughout the book as the individuals she meets come hilariously & tragicallly to life. Ruth Waterman is not only a distinguished violinist but also a writer of enormous skill with an ability to capture the subtlest nuances of the personalities & situations she encounters. She writes with great insight & humanity & her often searingly honest accounts of her own reactions serve to illuminate this complex tangle of human experience. This is also some of the best writing I have read about the life of a professional musician. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is curious about what the life of a professional musician is reallly about from the moments of deeply unglamorous compromises to the richest rewards of spiritual illumination. An unmissable book - I can't wait to re-read it!
