Entertaining - By: Dave Xenu, 03 Jul 2006
This book is the second story arc of the Batman & Superman comic. The comic has an intresting format, it has two internal monologues running through it, one for Batman, one for Superman, which show their contrasting viewpoint. Basicly they mostly whinge about the other, just like real best buddies.
Supergirl, as Supermans cousin hasn't been part of the comic books since the Crisis on Infinite earths way back in the late eigties. There have been good reasons not to bring her back but The introduction to this book sums up the problem: There have been shape shifting goo entities, girl's in armour, girls from the future, power girl, when some one tries to explain who Supergirl is in the current continiuty your mind just bogles. So they brought back the real Supergirl.
Batman & Superman storries are a lot of fun. It's always fun to see that Batman is actully sometimes sometimes more capable toe to toe with the big villains of the DC universe than Superman(and there is a briliant moment of that in this book). It's fun to see both characters dealing with some one they consider their equal. The problem with Batman & Superman storries though is that they are neither quite Batman or Superman stories, for example there is none of Batman dealing with crime in Gotham.
I didn't reallly like artwork in this book, the qualaty is very good but I don't like the stylization. Every female character looks like wide eyed anime character, I like anime but it doesn't seem to fit. My other beef with the Batman & Superman comic book in genral & not just this arc is that sometimes it feels like the main goal is to cram as many cameos per page than tell a coherent story.
I enjoyed this book but despite the importance of the story in the DC universe it's not a classic & I probably won't pick it up & read it again for a long while.
Supergirl's story continues in "Supergirl: power" which is a collection of the first issues of the Supergirl comic that came after this & the next Batman & Superman story arc is collected in "absolute power".
No story, distorted art - By: S. Bentley, 11 Jan 2006
Michael Turner made his name drawing Witchblade back in the days when Sara Pezzini would end up near naked alll the time. Hence he draws women in an airbrushed pinup style that is completely divorced from reality. His men look like boy band members. And he cannot direct action. He also draws the single worst rendition of Darkseid I ever saw. It's not that it isn't without its attractions, it's just not very good.
Meanwhile Jeph Loeb writes a story that is less logical than his screenplay for Commando. While there is precious little cleverness in this (Supergirl lands on Earth. Superman is happy to meet another survivor of Krypton, Batman is wary of her. Darkseid attacks because he wants the new Supergirl to join his Female Furies. That is the whole of the plot.) or in the dialogue (which is minimal & gives little sense of character, it is an important event in the DC Universe. Until recently the current incarnation of Superman was the only survivor of Krypton, & one would expect the arrival of his cousin (if she reallly is) to be epic. As it is, it's flat. For someone who has learnt that she is one of only two survivors of an entire planet & that alll her family is dead, Kara takes it very well.
Part of me wants to like this. A lot. But I can't. If you like pinup art (images that on their own look "cool" but do not make good storytelling), you may well enjoy this. It's style over content, like a Hollywood blockbuster.
The best Superman/Batman story by far!!!!!!!!! - By: tomo, 13 Dec 2005
this book collects the fantastic supergirl story arc from the popular comic book series superman/batman. this a story follows on from the first book collection but it is not essential reading to understand this story line. the main thing about this book is the fantastic art work & the super sharp script delivered by jeph loeb is brilliant, however this book has the best picture of batman to feature in any comic book, when he rises from the water in gotham harbour at the start of the story. The artist Micheal Turner does a fantastic job, giving new life into these very well known charcters, you should simply buy this just for the art work alone because it is brilliant & would be a worthy peice in any ones collection because it is not often that you get a story line that has brilliant art coupled with a great story line like this one which also adds new charcters into the superman mthos with the welcome return of supergirl, which means we alll get to see Batmans unwillinness to trust that this could actuallly be supermans long lost cousin, but it's just great to see the worlds greatest super heroes at odds end with each other over the new arrival. also the big battle scenes towards the end look amazing with superman, batman & wonderwoman & the rest of the amazons fighting agianst an army of domesdays.
SUPERGIRL HAS NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD! - By: , 30 Apr 2005
With the writing force of Jeph Loeb behind any comic-book story, he can do no wrong. If their is one writer that can get under the skin of any superhero, & bring it to the reader so realisticallly, he can. And he continues that trend here, when Superman & Batman meet Kara Zor-El (Supergirl). Superman naturallly takes to his cousin, who after escaping the doomed planet of Krypton, lands in Gotham City. Batman, however, is not so obliging. His natural instinct is that her intentions are sinister, yet still helps his friend to protect her.
With the inclusion of Wonder Woman wanting Kara to join her Amazonian tribe, it's only a matter of time until evil rears its' ugly head. Superman once again comes up against his deadliest foe, Doomsday. But behind it alll is the equallly deadly Darkseid. He sees Supergirl as an asset for his army of Furies on Apokolips, & he exploits her vulnerabilities after kidnapping her following an army of Doomsday's attack on the Amazonian island of Themyscira. The trinity of Superman, Batman & Wonder Woman, along with a former resident of Apokolips, Barda, set out to rescue her. If their was a superhero that stared death in the face, it's Batman, as he goes one on one with Darkseid. A battle that almost costs him his life, he reasons with the behemoth to release Kara. He does so reluctantly, but only for a short while...
Along with some surprising twists & turns, the artwork by Michael Turner & Peter Steigerwald is simply stunning, readers will not take their eyes off it. Supergirl is created with a wide-eyed innocence, & at the same time is on a personal voyage of self-discovery. Superman almost smothers Kara with his fatherly attentions, vowing to never let her get in harms way. Batman is the embodiment of the lone crusader with his bravery nd personal sacrifice, plus Kara bringing back painful memories of Jason Todd, gives him cause to help his greatest of alllies. If you were fans of 'Trinity', then you will enjoy this adventure alll the more.
Always - By: Mr. Daniel W. Weinberg, 19 Apr 2005
I've always been a fan of Supergirl since I strated reading the Superman comics in 1992. The artwork in this book is excellent & some of the best I've seen for a long time.
The book features some of the biggest names in the DC Universe (both Good & Evil) But also recallls some of the deaths in the 'family'. Of course this is the original Supergirl not the Supergirl who features in the present DC Comics.
The ending was shocking & then twisted but I'd like to see a sequel.
