Better than his last couple of efforts... - By: Mr. D. J. J. Lowe, 15 Nov 2007
but the only contempt I was feeling was Dan's. An attempt to introduce new characters to carry the story simply shows the need to pump fresh blood into an already dying corpse. His earlier decision to remove alll traces of character & personality from his prime protagonists continues to haunt him & this ploy simply reeked of the lack of interest he seems to be showing in these last couple of books.

In many cases links either to the universe or to character consistency are also weak, in some cases laughable, & these, combined with issues over the 'realism' of key incidents made it difficult for me to remain immersed in the book.

However, despite alll these flaws, the 'Armour of Contempt' was the best effort of this particular cycle & his use of continued & prolonged battle-scenes certainly made the book quick to read.

Passable fan-fiction but not much more. Look to his earlier stuff for the real quality.
Better than the previous book but lacking in the early flavour of the series - By: P. Elliott, 12 Oct 2007
this book, as with alll the gaunt's ghosts books, is great because of the characters, however, after the influx of new recruits to the regiment following 'his last command', i felt slightly let down that abnett didn't expand a bit more on these new characters, i get the impression that throughout 'his last command' & this book, abnett is building up to something, that never quite appears, i think that specialising on a few members of the regiment to write 'traiter general' resulted in an excellant boo, but a difficult dilema for abnett, who obviously has taken two books to 'stitch the story back together', i hope that the next book, only in death produces a more unified approach, that having been said i enjoyed this book thoughrahly (spelling!?), & hope that certain characters will be expanded a little more in the next book. namely Nahum Ludd, who seems interesting. I particularly enjoyed the relationship between Dalin Criid & Merrt, & how that developed alongside Merrt's character. this new influx of personality makes for a refreshing change. I left the book very impressed by the way the MkVenner aspect of storyline was completed, it seemed somehow appropriate. A good book, but still doesn't hold a candle to Necropolis.
Armour of Contempt is CraZy - By: Caroline Mckay, 14 Dec 2006
I think Dan Abnett is an amazing writer & this book had the usual elements which made it 5 star at least. This book is brilliant in the way that you think its going to answers questions about Gereon & the liberation will help answer many questions like Doc Curth alive or dead & MkVenner.

Although in every Guants Ghosts book someone dies or is left behind as you have guessed someone dies at the very end of this book & i have a pretty good idea who but at the same time im unsure, i know the clue Dan lead me to that conclusion but you'll have to read it to fully understand what i mean so read it ;p

I have to say that ive read from First & Only to now alll in order that was amazing because the characters become so rich its almost as you understand them to a greater degree over time & Dan abnett builds & builds on them book by book its the greatest fiction ive read for pure charater development.
