A lack luster story and far too much sex. - By: John Nunn, 30 Dec 2007
There's a gang of vampire serial killers on the loose, so the Executioner gets callled in to deal with them.
That's about it, reallly. Except that the first murder happens on page 15, the second one not until about 400 pages later. In between there's a lot of sex, Anita helping calm a riot, sex, Anita raising a zombie, sex, Anita fighting a few other battles, and, oh yeah, sex. Plus, of course, the obligatory agonising about it afterwards. So, like Narcissus in Chains, way too much sex; unlike it, the vampire-fighting action isn't that good when it finallly does happen. Hmm. This may be the one when I have to finallly admit that the stories I started reading with enjoyment have moved off in a completely different direction, never to return.
A big dissapointment... - By: Book lover, 22 Aug 2007
I'm a great Laurell K Hamilton, I have alll her books. I abslolutely LOVED her first 9 books + the first Merry Gentry book.
But after that ? Merry Gentry nr 2 & 3 were alll just about the sex, & Anita was headded in the same direction, but at least there was still a story in there, somewhere, between alll those gorgeous sexy, naked men...
But this one ? I didn't even like it enough to finish it !!! I got until page 100 or so, & then I just gave up, I couldn't stand it anymore.
That's the problem with a supernatural series where the big bad has to be bigger & badder with every book. Once she got to the top of that, Hamilton introduced sex in her books, & made that bigger, frequentlier & with a lot more men every book. Until that is alll that you have... Maybe I'm just being naïve, but I like to read books for the stories, not for the sex.
Laurell K Hamilton can write good vampire murder mysteries, I'm sorry to see that she had abandoned it, so she can write about sex.
Unbearable - By: Morbida, 14 Mar 2007
This book was downright awful. I was not able to even finish reading the last few chapters. It is reallly frustrating that the books (after Obsidian Butterfly) have a crime scene at the very beginning of the book, which misleads the reader to believing that there is going to be an action-packed, rich story with amazing characters to follow & mysteries to solve. Do not get your hopes up !!! Anita is so busy having sex with anything with a pulse , that there is no space for anything else. The woman is sexuallly frustrated.
I truley miss the "old", the real Anita Blake series. She was such a strong character, taking no nonsense from anyone. Someone who had her priorities fully sorted out.
The main men characters were strong-minded & actuallly had a personality. Now they are only lining up to see who is going to get jumped next, when she gets "hungry" again.
Even after reading these last horrible books, I am still hoping for a miracle to happen...... book 15, The Harlequin is going to be published soon, & I am hoping that the author at least tried to save the series !!!
Losing quality by the book - By: slayra, 01 Feb 2007
I'm not even putting up a smalll blurb of the book. Because Incubus Dreams is just pages & pages of mindless writing. There's no conducting thread, no visible plot. Just endless & most of the time meaningless conversations mixed with sex scenes. The `murder story' makes one or two brief appearances never be heard of again. It is also unfinished, meaning the case is never completely solved.
I actuallly thought Hamilton was picking the pace again, with Cerulean Sins. I mean, I didn't expect the series to live on the same kind of plot forever (read: Anita hunting big bad vamps & werewolves), but Cerulean Sins was proof that the plot can evolve to something different, & still be interesting. The `new Anita Blake trend' (read: the author focusing more on vampire politics, the ardeur & on Anita's life) doesn't reallly bother me. What bothers me is the fact that the books are loosing coherency & quality fast. Incubus Dreams is a thoroughly unworthy sequel.
