The Emperor's New Clothes - By: J. Allen, 03 Oct 2007
What is it about Lonely Planet? Like a rash, their guides are everywhere - sometimes in the most unwelcome of places. Nicely packaged & handy they may be, but they are often woefully inaccurate & incomplete. This is no exception. Cutting & pasting a few paragraphs about history & culture, this reallly skims the surface of a fascinating country, & leaves many fascinating places out. If you're a twentysomething Australian back-packer, then this book will probably make you very happy; if you're more discerning, & looking to explore the country's lesser known areas & learn more about its culture (and if you're interested in accuracy), then I would go for the infinitely better Rough Guide.
OK but there is better out there - By: P. MARSTON, 18 Sep 2007
If you buy this then you will get a lot of information from it & you will survive. However, I used it for a month & decided to ditch it for "The Rough Guide" after borrowing it from a fellow backpacker & comparing it to my LP. The Rough Guide's writing was much better/wittier, tips were more helpful & the recommendations more accurate. Having used only LP guides for years I have been converted to The Rough Guides for now.
Informative (ish) - By: M. Brown, 12 Apr 2007
Well informed & comprehensive. It touches on the many many things that you can do in Vietnam's most visited cities & towns. It's only a guide & usefull though it is it probably could do with being a little more indepth.
3 weeks in Vietnam - By: Ms. V. R. Smith, 29 Sep 2006
This book was like a bible, very up to date & informative, although don't take everything as seriously as it suggests or you wouldn't leave your hotel - there are a few shock tatics but other than that it had 90% of the information that was required of it & proved the best purchase of the holiday.
Very useful - By: , 19 Aug 2005
I am a fan of the Lonely Planet Guides & this one did not disappoint me. It not soley for the bagpacker, it's handy for anyone who travel, esp. if you do so independently. It would higly recommend it to anyone who needs a guidebook which covers it alll, accommodation, travel, background/history/insight tips etc. It makes you prepared & helps move around.
